Use Statement
JawSpace is intended to assist users in the self-management of Temporomandibular Disorders (“TMD”). The mobile application enables users to explore, examine, track, and understand their symptoms, providing tailored self-management plans that include exercises, thermal therapies, and educational resources. These self-management techniques are intended to help manage symptoms and improve the quality of life for individuals living with TMD.
Specifically, JawSpace collects user input, such as daily symptom logs and exercise completion data through a series of questionnaires. The software processes this input to provide personalised feedback, progress tracking, and educational content aimed at improving the user’s management of TMD.
JawSpace is intended to be used by adults aged over 18, pre-diagnosed with TMD or any common subtypes of TMD by a healthcare professional.
JawSpace is not intended to be used by individuals with symptoms requiring immediate medical intervention or that are of such a substantial nature they cause thoughts of self-harm or suicidal ideation. It should not be used where other conditions mimic symptoms of TMD or immediately following trauma to the face.
No training is required to use JawSpace and it can be used in a home or clinical setting by a layperson.
Please refer to the “Exclusions” and “Contraindications” sections of this IFU for more information regarding circumstances when JawSpace should not be used.
Safety Information
Safety Summary for JawSpace Who should NOT use JawSpace (Contraindications)
JawSpace should not be used by individuals who: 1. Do not have a confirmed TMD diagnosis (symptoms must be assessed by a healthcare provider first) 2. Have had recent trauma to the jaw, face, or neck (e.g. fractures, dislocations) 3. Have conditions that mimic TMD, including: • Cardiac-related jaw pain (urgent medical attention required) • Neurological conditions (e.g. trigeminal neuralgia) 4. Are under 18 years old 5. Have active infections in the jaw or mouth (e.g. abscess, pericoronitis, swelling, fever) 6. Are experiencing sudden, severe, or worsening undiagnosed pain 7. Are in a mental health crisis (e.g. suicidal thoughts — requires immediate support)
Possible Side Effects (Generally Mild & Temporary) 1. Jaw muscle discomfort or fatigue from exercises 2. Increased awareness of symptoms due to tracking 3. Temporary symptom flare-ups or discomfort during use
Key point: These are usually mild and manageable. Users should stop and seek care if symptoms worsen or don’t settle.
Key Risks (Cannot Be Fully Eliminated) • Incorrect input → inappropriate recommendations • Over-focusing on symptoms → increased perceived pain • Using the app when professional care is actually needed
These risks are considered acceptable when balanced against the benefits of guided self-management.
Warnings & Precautions (Use With Medical Advice) Users should consult a healthcare provider before use if they have: • Recent surgery (head, neck, jaw, airway) • Pregnancy (some techniques may need modification) • Systemic conditions (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, lupus affecting the jaw)
Other considerations: • Screen use may cause eye strain → take breaks • New features or techniques should be used cautiously if unsure
Important Expectations • JawSpace supports self-management, not diagnosis or emergency care • TMD symptoms can fluctuate, even with correct use • The app is not a cure, but a structured support tool
Please see the Instructions for Use (IFU) for more information
