Laminitis®, the official Laminitis Risk® app, a Grazing Risk Monitoring Service provides horse owners with a practical tool to help monitor weather conditions in a way that can be used to warn when grazing on grass posses an increased risk to horses prone to laminitis.
Local weather conditions are monitored and used to predict the rise and fall of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) in C3 grasses and starch in C4 grasses. When the predicted levels of NSCs or starch increase, this is shown as a rise in risk.
Under extreme weather conditions grass can become stressed and in these circumstances significantly increase the risk of a horse becoming footy or suffering a laminitic episode. When this type of weather pattern happens the risk gauge will rapidly increase to High and maintain this level until the NSC and grass stress levels are predicted to have lowered again.
Today, laminitis is a major problem for horses worldwide and is one of the most common causes of lameness. With the help of this app as an educational tool, it is hoped that fewer horses will suffer from this condition in the future.
With the standard version of the Laminitis app, the one-time purchase grants you access to the core features:
• Quick & easy access to realtime monitoring of the risk level where you are
• Choice of using your current location (GPS) or use the built-in search to locate the place you would like to monitor
• Access to in-app educational information
For additional weather data and advanced features a single subscription grants you access to:
• Access NSC forecast levels up to 24 hours in advance to support better grazing safety decisions
• Laminitis Risk® notifications alerts and daily reminders
• Advanced weather analytics to estimate Fructan, Starch, Simple sugars and NSC levels
• Configurable temperature statistics (over 24hr period)
• Hourly UV levels and cloud cover
• Daylight hours: Sunrise, Midday, Sunset (local time zones)
• Wind, Humidity & Pressure readings
• Global search (includes all supported countries)
DISCLAIMER
This application is not intended as a replacement for correct animal husbandry or to replace veterinary advice, it's role is simply to act as an additional early warning tool to advise when grasses at the location you have selected are likely to be 'under stress' and therefore to have accumulated excess non-structural carbohydrates (NSC, i.e. sugars, starch or fructan) which could significantly increase the risk of a laminitic episode should it be grazed.
This app can give you a warning when the risk of grazing induced laminitis is rising or high. However, individual horses vary widely in their ability to tolerate fluctuations in NSC levels so what is safe for one horse may not be safe for another. In addition, grazing is only one risk factor for laminitis and you need also to be aware of the risks posed by other causes, including toxins, metabolic problems and sugar and starch levels in hard feed, which cannot be measured by this app.

Location at best is several miles away despite being in a highly populated area. App sometimes freezes for several days. Seems to work on temperature alone - I can get free weather forecasting apps which are more accurate for the location so this seems to have been a waste of money
Developer Response
Thank you for your feedback. We’ve made several major updates and improvements to the app recently, including significant enhancements to the search feature. The Laminitis App’s data service uses a sophisticated computer model that incorporates various weather parameters and the specific types of grasses (C3/C4) found in your location. This allows us to provide a quick and easy risk prediction to support your daily horse management decisions.

i have this app because i have a laminitis pony so i wanted an app to help to check how high the sugars were in the grass. I paid £5.99 for it and it’s just been a waste of money, every single time i check it no matter what location i’m in (my yard is not close to me where i live it’s about 10-15 minute drive) the checker goes to the same place every single time. Every time i check the app it says the same thing, clearly it’s just a waste of time and i’m cancelling my subscription because you can’t tell me every time i check it and in different places the sugars are at the same level. Wouldn’t recommend it to anybody because it doesn’t work.

Works for me
janeeto
I see that others are having problems with this app since update to iPhone. I’m on the newest Apple iPhone version and have had no problems at all. The app now sees me exactly where I am rather than a few miles away now it uses GPS to locate me. I paid a one off 99p several years ago and it’s never let me down. I don’t know what it costs now but I wouldn’t be without it.
12 years of helping manage EMS

This APP has been a game changer for me, helping me every day decide if it safe to turn out my exceptionally sensitive EMS pony (with her muzzle on) The developments over the years have continued to improve the accuracy. Obviously it is very important to continue to monitor condition and count calories as well as managing starch & sugar .. but the APP helps in a very real way… AMAZING!!
Updated with fresh improvements inspired by your suggestions. We’re always listening and working behind the scenes to make the app better for you. Thanks for your continued support!
