Samuel's 11+ Practice
7 subjects, Reception to 11+
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Samuel's 11+ Practice brings seven subjects together in one friendly app — short, encouraging sessions that build from first counting and phonics all the way to 11+ exam style.
• Maths: arithmetic, place value, fractions, measurement, geometry, ratio, algebra, statistics and problem solving — plus worksheet-style practice sessions.
• English: phonics, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension.
• Verbal and non-verbal reasoning: letter codes, sequences, analogies, shapes and patterns.
• Science, History and Geography quizzes to round out the day.
• "Today's picks" chooses a short daily mix of subjects, sized to your child's age.
• Grows with your child across five levels, from Reception to 11+ exam style.
• Read-aloud questions for pre-readers and big, child-friendly tap targets.
• Feedback is warm and supportive — never red marks.
• A grown-up area (behind a parental gate) sets the levels and daily plan and tracks progress.
Completely private and offline: no accounts, no ads, no data collected — ever.
more Children now have time to read an explanation.
• When the app shows the answer and explains it, "I understand" works only after 10 seconds. You can switch this off in the grown-up area.
• Spelling tests and phonics games say each word one time. The voice no longer runs a repeated word together ("feetfeet").
• The app says "perfect score" only when your child skipped no question.

Today's plan counts all the games your child finishes.
• A finished game with a skipped question counts in today's plan. A game of only skips does not count.
• Today's score counts each answer one time.

Explore: six new tools on the home screen.
• Dictionary: more than 1,700 words. Look up a word, then hear the word and what it means.
• Guide to maths: 43 pages with pictures and worked examples.
• Speed and distance: learn the rule step by step, then use the calculator. For age 9 and up.
• Periodic table: all 118 elements, each with its own card. For age 10 and up.
• Cube puzzle: 10 step-by-step lessons, and a cube to turn and play with.
• Patterns: tiles that turn, mirror pictures, wheel art and a sunflower to play with.
• In the grown-up area, you can show all the Explore tools at all ages.
• On an iPad on its side, the answer boxes sit next to the question.
• The celebration confetti shows on screen.
• Small corrections to questions and pictures.
2.14.0 4 Oct
Year 1 spellings, and better reading of handwriting.
• A new Spellings section on the home screen holds the Year 1 spelling year, week by week. Your child can practise each week's words, take a spelling test, and try more words with the same sound.
• Spellings use the games' letter boxes, hints and stars. A spelling session that is left part-way carries on where it stopped.
• The app reads your child's handwriting more accurately, and tells a dotted i from an l.
• The letter keypad shows lower-case letters.
• On iPad, "Rub out everything you have written?" always shows "Keep my writing".
• Every listening question now plays its sound, and a finished game counts towards today's plan.
• Smaller fixes to questions, hints and pictures.
2.13.21 2 Oct
Handwriting answers that are easier to fix, and fairer marking.
• If the app cannot read a number or letter, "Which one did you write?" shows each box with your child's writing. One tap fixes it.
• A choice that your child makes there counts as their answer, with a hint and a second try when it is wrong.
• Spaced review brings each question back at longer gaps, and short look-back sessions replace long repeats.
• "Keep what he writes in games" is now on by default, so the app learns your child's handwriting and reads it better.
• Sharing handwriting samples and progress backups from the grown-up area now works on iPad.
• Many smaller fixes for double taps, the keypad, iPad layouts and questions that repeated.
2.13.20 25 Sept
More reliable handwriting answers and an easy way past any question.
• Check stays available while your child writes and uses their latest handwriting when pressed.
• Skip question is available for written, tapped and typed answers, even when the answer is empty or handwriting cannot be read.
• Skipping does not mark an unanswered practice question wrong.
• Improved handling of repeated button presses and interruptions, so actions cannot carry over to the next question.

Fixes to what the app records about your child, and to what it says to them.
• If a grown-up changes a game's level part-way through a session, the app no longer counts handwritten answers nobody has marked yet as mastered, and no longer scores that day 100%.
• The same answers are no longer counted twice after a level change, so a topic is only finished when the work is really done.
• The grown-up button on the home screen now waits for the first-run age question, like the tiles below it.
• Praise varies between sittings, so a question your child meets again is not greeted with the identical word.
2.13.16 12 Sept
Weekly practice for school spelling and maths tests. A grown-up sets the week's spelling words or generates arithmetic questions, and your child writes on ruled A4 paper each day before the test.
Spelling support follows your child's age: see the word, look and cover, or listen only. Short and long division now use the bus-stop method, and column addition and subtraction vary their digits properly.
Your child confirms what the app reads back from their own handwriting, so a misread never costs a mark. Working out stays outside the answer boxes and is never marked. Weekly word lists are now included in your progress backup.
Also fixed: a resumed question now shows the answer your child already wrote, coordinate grids offer larger touch targets, and the practice paper no longer shifts if a save needs retrying.
Identical answer tiles are now interchangeable when marking. Matching supports several items with the same answer, and partially completed matching and missing-word answers survive rotating the iPad.
Switching between handwriting and tapping clears old selections consistently.
Faster handwriting comparison with the same recognition rules.
2.13.15 11 Sept
Improved handwriting recognition for word answers and common printed letter shapes. You can now correct any misread letter or number before checking your answer. Corrections are saved consistently, and writing boxes stay fully inside the paper. This update also improves answer-box sizing, sentence-ordering instructions and handwriting review records.

The robotic voice is gone.
• Over 8,000 new recordings. At the two starter levels every question, hint, answer choice and explanation is now spoken by a warm British voice — so a child who cannot read yet can hear the whole exercise, not just the question
• Tap any answer to hear it read out before you choose
• Get it wrong and the hint is read to you; see the answer and the explanation is read too
• Wipe button on the iPad notes area, and the notes no longer cover the answers when you turn the iPad sideways
Everything is on the device. No account, nothing sent anywhere.

A real voice, and room to work things out.
• Over 750 new recordings — every starter-level question, every reading story your child can hear, and every teaching card is now read aloud by a warm British voice instead of the robotic one
• On iPad, a proper notes area sits under each question: write and draw with a finger or Apple Pencil, in three colours, with an eraser
• Coins and notes are drawn properly now — the right shapes, sizes, colours and edges, so your child learns what real money looks like
• Fixed: at starter level the story is always read before the question that asks about it

Meet Sam, a helper your child can ask about the question on screen — in his own words.
• Sam runs entirely on your iPad. Nothing your child types is sent anywhere, and there is no account
• He will not give away the answer to a question your child is still working on — he points at the method, like a good hint
• After a missed question, Sam can explain why that particular answer was wrong, which a fixed explanation cannot do
• Off by default, and switched on only in the grown-up area. From Climber level up
• Every conversation is saved for you to read
Needs Apple Intelligence, so Sam appears only on iPads that support it.
2.9.0 13 Aug
A big quality release, reviewed screen by screen:
• The mascot now asks questions from a speech bubble and reacts as your child answers
• Getting it right celebrates properly: praise, stars, rising chimes — and a smarter second try that rules out a wrong option when there's no hint
• Missed questions come back until they stick, and harder questions step down when a run goes badly
• Trophy shelf, star shop (parents set real-world prizes) and a fairer streak that follows the daily rotation
• A much richer grown-up area: mastery bars and trends, day-by-day history that never clips, progress export and import, level-down as well as level-up
• Text now scales properly with your device's text-size setting throughout
2.8.0 30 Jul
• Tricky questions now come back: anything your child gets wrong returns over the following days — first the next day, then with growing gaps — until they get it right several days running.
• One star balance across every subject: stars from Maths, English and all the other games now add up together, harder questions earn more stars, and finishing two subjects in a day boosts the next day's stars by half.
• Around 270 new practice questions and 13 new reading passages, weighted to Reception and Years 1–2: comprehension and inference, vocabulary in context, phonics, punctuation, grammar, early writing craft, fractions, shapes and problem solving — plus space, then-and-now history, world flags, the UK, electricity safety and famous people.
• Coin questions now draw real UK coins at their true relative sizes throughout.
• The scorecard gains a 90-day totals column, and the grown-up area can log results from practice papers sat outside the app.
• Twelve more one-screen "learn cards" for the skills your child meets next.
2.7.0 29 Jul
• Real UK money, drawn to true size: new coin and note questions teach recognition — which coin is copper, why the tiny 5p beats the big 2p, the seven-sided 50p, the two-colour £1 and £2, and the £5–£20 notes. Everyday money sums now show the coins too.
• Around 350 new practice questions and sixteen new reading passages, weighted to Reception and Years 1–4, across every subject — including first-concepts coordinates and currency.
• 32 "learn cards": one-screen explanations the first time your child meets a new skill, now also revisitable any time from a small book badge on the topic map. Off by default; switch on in the grown-up area.
• A full quality audit of the science, history and geography questions: one plant-biology slip corrected, duplicate questions removed across the whole bank, pictures aligned with their questions.
• The Maths Worksheets daily workout now continues forever — a fresh mixed workout every day once the built-in ones are done — and the daily tick keeps working.
• Also in the grown-up area, off by default: timed mock exam papers and an exam countdown.
2.6.7 27 Jul
• Nearly 150 new practice questions across Maths (fractions, measurement, place value), English (reading, vocabulary, sentence skills, writing craft) and four brand-new reading passages — mostly at the Year 1–4 levels.
• When an answer is wrong, the "try again" hint now stays on screen until your child taps it — no more disappearing before it has been read.
• Maths Worksheets now shows a green tick when the day's workout is finished, and today's workout is a full-length session, sized to match the other subjects.
• Small fixes and polish.
