WHAT THE HOUSE OF LORDS ACTUALLY IS The Lords is the second chamber of the UK Parliament. Its members are appointed rather than elected, and most are there for what they know. Sitting in the chamber are surgeons, scientists, judges, senior police officers, head teachers, disability campaigners, trade unionists, former ministers and people who have run the institutions the rest of us only read about. Their job is to go through legislation line by line, question the government, and send bills back to the Commons when the detail doesn't work. WHY IT MATTERS TO YOU There are no constituencies in the Lords. No peer belongs to you — and that cuts both ways. Any peer can take an interest in any issue, and many follow one subject closely for decades. So the way in isn't your postcode. It's the subject. Filter by party, or by Crossbench: peers who sit with no party at all. Crossbenchers include many of the House's most specialist members.
