I love this application. Have dipped in and out of it over the years but it's obvious this is a labour of love for its small team of developers and it shows. Key reasons I like it: 1) It seamlessly integrates with Apple Photos including raw support so i'm not managing photos in multiple locations 2) The new render engine gives much more lattitude for shadow/highlight recovery and sufficient for 99% of my work which is mostly shared digitally with occasional prints up to A3. 3) Presets and ability to share them means I can apply high quality consistent looks without resorting to Lightroom or VSCO subscriptions. Particularly like the Fuji Classic Chrome they have to download on their website. 4) same app across all my apple devices for one small subscription or a bargain on-off cost in my case which is less than half the cost of one year of Lightroom. Paired with Affinity Photo this covers all of my editing needs. Your mileage may vary but great job to the Darkroom team. Happy customer.

Edited review June 2021: the app is currently almost entirely broken. When trying to edit video within the app, the content gets stuck in a “loading video” loop which bricks the rest of the app. It is absolutely useless, and I am extremely disappointed. As a paying customer of the premium version, and given the fact that I use the app for my work, it is unacceptable that this bug still hasn’t been fixed. I have reached out for help, and only been told that you’re aware of the issue. No further updates or indication of when things will be restored. Previous review: 5*s Wow! What a fantastic app. Love how simple it appears from the outset, utilising the preexisting Apple Photo-editing design language, but then going further, allowing some truly deep modification of your pics. Hands down the best feature is being able to copy and paste profiles from one photo to another. This has already saved me SO MUCH time. Just so good to have on a mobile device. I also adore the fact they have a real iPad app. It’s not a scaled-up version of the phone app. It’s fully customised for the larger real estate you get on a iPad. And, guys, this app is powerful. And FAST! My MacBook Pro kicks up a fuss whenever I use Photoshop (or even Mac Photos tbh). DarkRoom has never so much as stuttered on my iPad, and is buttery smooth and SO responsive. The phone app is equally good, though I’ve not actually used it much yet. But being able to have all this power in the palm of your hand is pretty nuts when you think about it. Makes editing photos a pleasure rather than a task. I recommend this app to everyone.

I thought I’d give the trial a go, but found that there seemed to be quite a bit missing. Masks are limited with no means to manually tweak some of the erroneous foreground/background edges as there’s no way to paint missing parts of a mask or push/smudge parts of a portrait or depth mask that is incorrect. Also there’s no way to invert a radial mask. The website claims to be able to blur background in a portrait photo, but I was unable to find any blur function no matter how hard I tried on both iPhone and iPad. There’s some nice ui elements, but it feels like ‘half’ an app. There’s no effect like bokeh that you can mask in etc. even the presets aren’t affected by masks.I can’t justify the cost. I’d pay about ¼ the price as I could only see myself using it casually. Snapseed does so much more and has a hidden mask mode which you can apply on every single image adjusting function, filter, and effect, so that you can blend or paint that adjustment in. All those masks are adjustable from a history of operations you’ve made. Snapseed is free, so I would expect Darkroom to offer more flexibility. Darkroom does offer video processing, but for those working with photos, it seems to add to the price substantially.
