Difficult to say anything more than others already have, but this is head and shoulders above any other app you’re going to find for the Lakes. While I always carry a paper map just in case I rarely, if ever, need to refer to it. A compass to check direction and OS locate to check altitude if the weather is really bad is a good idea, but otherwise you can’t really do better than this. Has got me up and down 207 of the 214s via multiple routes without any problem. There are lots of paths in the Lakes that aren’t old public rights of way so aren’t included, as with OS, but being able to important others’ gpx files sorts that one out. Some of finer detail of OS maps is missing - walls, etc - but it also removes a lot of the clutter, and the colouring makes it a lot easier to read than the horrible red and orange mess of OS. In a word, brilliant. Thank you!
Far superior to the OS app

I was looking for a map app for a walking holiday in the Lake District. I tried the OS official app, but that was a painful experience and I quickly gave up.This app lets you download good maps of the whole Lake District to carry around offline. I never had any problems and would strongly recommend to anyone looking for something similar. If I need apps for other areas this developer will be my first call. Why only 4 stars? Two minor complaints. The app isn't optimised for an iPhone 6 screen size, meaning it doesn't make the best use of the available screen area. Given that size has been out for three years that's a bit poor. Also found the behaviour of the show my location button a bit counter intuitive (seem to have to tap it too many times). In particular, it requires extra taps to show the direction you're facing rather than doing this by default. This is both annoying, and also meant I didn't realise it had the feature until I found it by accident after a few days. Neither flaw should stop you buying the app, but it would be great if the develop could address them and make it perfect.

Thanks for the positive feedback and for giving us the opportunity to address your points. Re: the screen size issue you refer to - please note that there is an option in the left hand drawer user interface to change the size of some of the text. Re: the second point about needing to press the tracking button twice to orientate the map view with the compass - we have implemented this consistently with how Apple Maps works in an attempt to make it intuitive.
One of the best walking apps

This is one of the best apps ever made for walkers. In the Lake District quite often there is no mobile signal, and this app will always show you where you are on a very detailed map. Even in fog and mist you can see where you are and if you’re heading the right way. I have even used it to find car parking spaces when there is no mobile signal! I like the crosshair function where I can see how far it is to walk to a certain point. I always plan my routes first using Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 maps and the Wainwright pictorial guide books. I also have the Peak District app and it would be great if there were more places covered. I have been using this app for several years now, and I can still recall the first time I used it when my walking buddy told me he had also got a new walking app, and it was this very one!
Best of all Map Apps

I’ve used this for some time now and find it easy to use. I really like the appearance of the maps - very clear and easy to see and, as I’ve just discovered, much better than the OS maps as you get more information. I’d signed up for the OS app, thinking it would be the definitive map and thought I’d use it for a walk to Wansfell Pike. However, we found that many of the footpaths we saw (including a National Trust signed one) weren’t marked on the App. When I checked this app, I saw that the NT footpath was marked on it and then realised that, not only do you get the OS map, but information from other sources too so it’s much better. I deleted the OS app and will just stick with this one (and a paper map and compass for safety).
Developer Response
Thanks for the positive review. You’re quite correct, as clearly stated in the description, the app combines maps from OS, footpaths from contributors to OpenStreetMap and search data from OS and the Database of British and Irish Hills. It’s also possible to create or record custom routes or overlay routes from external sources. It’s pleasing to read you’re planning to keep your paper map and compass with you.
Fixed intermittent failures within the search functionality.
If you like the app please leave an app review.
