Very helpful I really love being able to freely get any word definition I need in a quick simple way, love the highlighting of important figures, but sadly on top of all this positive feedback I must say that I think that the subscription plan is a bit to pricey and should be more spread out allowing you to easily purchase, either full access, full access to just the thesaurus and etc. I believe this because of the factors that it would allow people to easily chose weather they want just one rather than having to pay out for everything just to use only some of the features. Overall I must say this app is super helpful, for those who may need a dictionary / thesaurus quickly or to just need a quick definition / upgrade in word class / proper translation. I believe this should advertised more, things to purchase to be separated for better choice and more information to be given as you get the app for the first time.5/5

Rather Pricey for Some

I had been planning as soon as I returned to work to pay the one-off fee for the offline access and no ads. Now I find that the one-off fee is no longer available and I must pay a minimum of £20 per year. Assuming that I keep the app (which would be my plan), this would cost just under £60 for three years, £100 for five years. While I completely understand the need for users to pay for this service, I, as a fee paying student and a zero hour worker with kids to care for, cannot justify such a high spend. It’s great for those who can afford it, but clearly this dictionary is not for the rest of us (except for the one word a day we are permitted without the premium package). Disappointing to say the least. After posting this review, it did get a response from the developer, but they seem to have missed the point I was making (or didn’t actually read the review properly). I made it clear that I agreed it was necessary to charge, but it was the jump from a reasonable one-off fee to a fee that can be prohibitive for some that I find problematic. They didn’t address this in their response. They also ‘reminded’ me that I don’t have to subscribe; I found this quite a callous response. But it is telling of their attitude (and lack of concern) about their less financially able users.

Initially confused because I’d already bought the Shorter OED app

I bought the Shorter OED app in 2014 for about £20, but when I had to reinstall it on a new device, it was no longer in the App Store. Initially, I thought I had to buy this new app if I wanted a good dictionary on my phone, and was not happy! However, when I looked in my list of ‘purchased apps, My old ‘Shorter OED’ was there in the list, and was able to reinstall it from there, which cheered me up enormously! I mention this just in case anyone else finds them self in a similar position. The Oxford Dictionary of English app here does not have as many entries as the Shorter OED, but the functionality and detail for each entry is just as good.

Great app with one annoyance

This is probably the most expensive single non-subscription app I have ever bought and it’s worth every penny: the OED available in your hand for less money than the paper version. The word list is complete, the formatting is clear, the words are interlinked so you can follow words and their usage, the “word of the day” stuff is moderately interesting, etc. All very useable and useful for users of British English, and much better than the online dictionaries that tend towards American English and excessive neologisms and acronyms etc. Five star stuff.There is however one extraordinarily annoying part: the app persistently bothers you to review it. Every time you start it up. Every single time. No option to tell it to stop bothering you, not even an option to tell it to stop asking for the next month or two… why? It’s extremely irritating. This would be a five star review but for this tedious begging behaviour. I had thought Apple had requirements around this stuff, but it seems this app ignores them.
