Developed by physiotherapists, EXi, formally known as iPrescribe Exercise, uses an automated algorithm to analyse your health and current fitness level, and prescribes a personalised and graduated physical activity plan to help everyone get active regardless of age, fitness level or disease status. It can also specifically target 20 different chronic diseases (or multiple co-morbidities, see below) with a tailored exercise program, and will track personalised health metrics so that the user can see the effect that their physical activity programme is having on their health.

You can choose how to complete your exercise program, with GPS tracked walking, running and cycling, home aerobics videos, gym programs and many others. If your health allows, you can exercise at low to moderate intensity or at high intensity. You can complete your exercise in one session, or multiple sessions throughout the day – whatever works best for you!

Download the app for free. We will then give a brief medical screen to ensure that exercise is safe (it will be for most people).

We will then ask for some health and fitness information from you, including if you have any of 20 chronic health conditions. The purpose of this is to build the most appropriate exercise program for your needs

To start an exercise, click “Record Activity” and you can choose to track an activity as you do it or log an exercise you have already completed. After completing the exercise, you will be asked to rate how hard it was and take your heart rate to give you guidance if you were exercising at the correct intensity.

Each week you can record health metrics that are relevant to you (e.g. resting heart rate, blood pressure, BMI) and every 6 weeks you can complete a 6-minute walk test to show your improvement!

EXi has been developed by medical professionals and follows the latest scientific guidelines for safety and effectiveness to ensure that you and your health professional can be confident that the exercise program that is prescribed is the most appropriate for your needs.

EXi is published across the UK on the NHS Apps library, it is based on the latest medical guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine, it won GSK’s global self-care challenge competition in 2019 and it has been funded by and received support from Sport England. We believe this is the first programme of its kind in the world, using the World's number 1 watch, and has the potential to make a huge impact on both health and healthcare delivery.

Set at just the right pace for me

I really like this app, I’ve not seen anything like this before for someone like me (very unfit..). I’m going to try really hard to follow this whilst stuck indoors self-isolating 🤞🏻

Good for most people

I really love the idea of this app, however, with it being for chronic illness I felt sad to find that it starts much too challenging for me. I feel it should give the option to set your own starting point. I was looking forward to using the app for motivation but I can’t really use it. I’ll just have to motivate myself for now :) a 6 minute walk or 4000 steps might sound like not much walking, but for a lot of people with chronic illness, that is actually a huge achievement to aim towards & to look forward to. A lot of us can only walk a few steps upon starting. That one change could make this app So Much Better & much more helpful for so many sick people. Thank you

Hi Claire,

Many thanks for downloading iPrescribe Exercise and thanks for the feedback. The App is designed to be useful for people with a chronic illness so I'm sorry you haven't found it fully helpful. I could make the following suggestions;
- We have just this minute added a very low intensity interval video (Interval Training 1) with 30 second of work interspersed with 20 seconds rest periods. This may be helpful.
- You don't need to complete all your prescription in one go. In fact we actually encourage people to do multiple small sessions a day with rests in between and this can often help if you have a chronic illness.
- If you are struggling to make the full prescription in a day, then just do what you can manage and use that as a starting point to gradually build.

Thanks for your review and if you'd like to, we would love to hear in more detail about how we can improve the experience. We are currently actively developing the App and would love as much feedback and ideas from users. You can email me at if you would like.

Overall a great simple user friendly app

Great interface easy to use and navigate.
A few syncing issues with Apple watch series 5 and the iPhone.
At present you have to log in then out to update.
So far I have enjoyed using this app.

Developer Response ,

Hi Cath. Thanks for your review and glad you are liking the App. We are bringing out a new version of the Watch App in the next couple of weeks which will significantly improve the syncing issues and allow you start exercises directly from your Watch.

Thanks, Lewis
