Beautifully detailed maps supplied by Ordnance Survey.

Lake District Maps provides a useful offline (no mobile signal required) mapping reference and navigation aid whilst travelling throughout the Lake District by footpath, road, rail, canal, lake and river.  Intuitive route and waypoint management features are implemented enabling creation, modification, deletion, import and export of routes. A powerful offline search facility can locate places, roads, post codes and hills within the region.   Worldwide online Apple Maps (Standard, Satellite and Hybrid) with map features that users are used to are available on both offline and online maps as well as providing 3D buildings on Apple maps (where available).

7 different levels of offline 2014/2015 Ordnance Survey map detail from national overview to street view within the region. (No data connection required).
Progressively more detailed maps are automatically loaded as the map view is zoomed. The OS recommended viewing scales for the more detailed maps are approximately as follows:

1:1000,000 (The whole of GB is covered at this map scale)
1:10,000 ( (Roads/streets are labelled by name))

The map region of the more detailed maps covers a rectangular region around the national park boundary (ref.

Best of all Map Apps

I’ve used this for some time now and find it easy to use. I really like the appearance of the maps - very clear and easy to see and, as I’ve just discovered, much better than the OS maps as you get more information. I’d signed up for the OS app, thinking it would be the definitive map and thought I’d use it for a walk to Wansfell Pike. However, we found that many of the footpaths we saw (including a National Trust signed one) weren’t marked on the App. When I checked this app, I saw that the NT footpath was marked on it and then realised that, not only do you get the OS map, but information from other sources too so it’s much better. I deleted the OS app and will just stick with this one (and a paper map and compass for safety).

Thanks for the positive review. You’re quite correct, as clearly stated in the description, the app combines maps from OS, footpaths from contributors to OpenStreetMap and search data from OS and the Database of British and Irish Hills. It’s also possible to create or record custom routes or overlay routes from external sources. It’s pleasing to read you’re planning to keep your paper map and compass with you.

Far superior to the OS app

I was looking for a map app for a walking holiday in the Lake District. I tried the OS official app, but that was a painful experience and I quickly gave up.

This app lets you download good maps of the whole Lake District to carry around offline. I never had any problems and would strongly recommend to anyone looking for something similar. If I need apps for other areas this developer will be my first call.

Why only 4 stars? Two minor complaints. The app isn't optimised for an iPhone 6 screen size, meaning it doesn't make the best use of the available screen area. Given that size has been out for three years that's a bit poor. Also found the behaviour of the show my location button a bit counter intuitive (seem to have to tap it too many times). In particular, it requires extra taps to show the direction you're facing rather than doing this by default. This is both annoying, and also meant I didn't realise it had the feature until I found it by accident after a few days. Neither flaw should stop you buying the app, but it would be great if the develop could address them and make it perfect.

Thanks for the positive feedback and for giving us the opportunity to address your points. Re: the screen size issue you refer to - please note that there is an option in the left hand drawer user interface to change the size of some of the text. Re: the second point about needing to press the tracking button twice to orientate the map view with the compass - we have implemented this consistently with how Apple Maps works in an attempt to make it intuitive.

Excellent app

I have used this app for the last week in the Lake District and have planned various routes on it... Even the lesser known routes with only small footpaths work out brilliantly. I feel it's hard to rely solely on technology but this is as good as it gets. I have looked up walks online and mapped them out myself on here, adding or removing particular sections, depending if we fancy walking less or further distance.

The only thing I don't understand is where you can download or view other people's gpx routes? Any advice would be great please?

I would fully recommend this app. Even if it had cost me £10 I would be glad I downloaded it. Worth every penny, thanks.

Thanks for the positive feedback. Here's some guidance re: your request for information about downloading gpx files....
