Still good but feels fragile
soulfreaks
I’ve used Logic Pro for donkeys years. Over time it has become bloated and feels fragile at times. The updates patch some problems or deliver new features, but never seem to manage to do it properly. They really need to sort out core efficiency - silicon and the new generation are incredibly powerful Macs, and Logic shouldn’t struggle with 3rd party plugins - but it does, regularly. Needing to engage an audio channel while playing back midi, to prevent clicks and pops, is incredibly frustrating. Low latency mode should be unnecessary, especially for +M1 Macs, but on Logic it’s absolutely necessary. Ableton doesn’t have the same issues (albeit it has others), but even still Logic is Apple Native, so it should really feel much more integrated. The plugins need updating, we don’t need more AI features, we need better quality editing tools for audio and midi and automation, improved file system and previews, ARA support, and better handling of core efficiency so that the music we produce doesn’t have to be constrained by freezing tracks or bouncing in place, to get around the performance issues. Please sort this out Logic.
TOTAL DISASTER

The new version of Logic (10.4) is a disaster. The flex functions are totally messed up, it knocks everything out of time. I have tried disabling Smart Tempo and removing tempo information from recorded regions but nothing is working. I basically can’t use any flex functions right now at all. I have wasted hours and hours on forums speaking to people trying to sort this out but to no avail. How Apple can lauch this in this state is beyond me. I am running LPX on a Mac Pro 6,1 Cylinder with 6 cores and 16GB RAM, it should be able to handle the processing of what I am doing with ease but ever since updating to 10.4 I am getting disk speed errors all over the place and also the flex pitch problem I have mentioned. It is also giving me huge problems with not recognising which track header I have enabled, if I enable Flex Pitch on a track it doesn’t register it in the side pane until I select a different track and then go back and select the one I just enabled. I waited a while to update both OSX to High Sierra and LPX to 10.4 to allow Apple’s developers to iron out any bugs but LPX certainly seems to be full of them now. I also can’t drop down the Tempo bar to reveal markers, it is stuck and is not allowing me to edit or delete markers. Navigation is slow and glitchy overall, for example, when opening the mixer it opens then closes and then I have to open it again and then it registers. The app has also frozen several times and crashed on many occasions. Very frustrating and leads me to look for other options.
Logic Pro could have been great

I’ve been using Logic Pro since eMagic Logic and every time a new version comes it, it gets worse. Right now I have 4 tracks open on a M3 Max in Logic Pro. I just want to add a snare roll, but the interface is slow to respond and it tries to put windows in front of options that used to be just one click. The designers of Apple Logic have failed over and over again and are holding back millions of producers with their slow buggy mess, that could actually be one of the most useful powerful, DAWs ever made. Don’t bother trying to have any continuity opening old projects because they will never sound the same. Couple that with the new useless mastering plugin that holds your computer for ransom while it makes your mix sound horrific and grainy. Do yourself a favor and get a good recording interface and compare a standalone multitrack recording to the garbage that Logic Pro produces when you bounce out. You will find that Logic Pro’s instruments are grainy, pixellated, and lose emphasis the moment you try to add another track or bounce your track. There is something deeply wrong with this software and the engineers are too busy enjoying their paychecks to fix it. You can tell Apple have lost the plot completely because their App Support link on the Logic Pro page goes to the iPad version instead of the Mac version. Go figure.
Very good but needs improving.

I produce a lot of music that is very sample based and I am very pleased about the latest sampler in the 10.5 update. However, unlike DAW's like Ableton or FL, I can't easily preview samples to drag into my sampler within the file browser. Logic seems to struggle to preview a lot of 32 bit samples but 16 bit is fine. This makes my workflow a lot slower, compared to Ableton and FL, where every sample is easily accesible and heard instantly. I usually have to resort to using the sampler in Alchemy where I can preview which sample fits my track at one click. This is what I have been doing for years but of course it takes a little longer than it should. A step in the right driection with the fast sampler, but still not entirely there with the 32 bit samples. I have hundreds of sample kits and can't be expected to convert them all, when Logic SHOULD just be able to preview them for me.
