Motif: Print photo memories 4+

Having created several Apple Photo Books over the years, I was sorry to see their withdrawal from the market. When I decided to start a new photo book, I searched the internet, and selected Motif because it promised to replicate the Apple system. Having spent a few hours trying to work through the differences which soon became apparent, I abandoned Motif and tried several other other products - every one of which proved to be even more difficult and unreliable! So I went back to my Motif project, and realised how much easier it became with a bit of perseverance… To cut a long story short, I am delighted with the finished product, which is indistinguishable from my Apple Books.

Please, Motif, before I start my next project: don’t make me go through the rigmarole of having laboriously to select the background colour etc of each individual page. Give me the option of making a selection that covers all the pages. Then, if I wish to change any particular page, I can do so.

I have struggled in the past with various on-line print providers and have never really had a favorite. The difficulty with producing a nice presentable book has often resulted in me giving up before completing the order. To be honest I somehow stumbled across Motif, I think after I tried to find the Apple prints programme. I wanted a book of photos after a special family holiday, when we actually all managed to get away together for the first time. So I was able to easily select the photos and put them into the Motif folder - and hey presto I had the book, it was very easy. I managed to move and change some of the pictures and inserted a title on the cover. I found the provided page layout options very satisfactory. I ordered three of the cheaper soft cover books and was very pleased with the end result. I was somewhat surprised when they arrived from Europe, but having read in one of the reviews about the previous connection Motif appeared to have with Apple, I was comfortable with this fact. So I am a very happy first time customer.
As I placed the final order I was faced with a query about two of the pictures I had used. I could not find anywhere how to find out what was wrong with them, which was a bit disconcerting. So I just went ahead and placed the order - thankfully the end result was good, and I still do not know what was wrong with them. I am not a photography or technical expert, so a little more help would have been welcomed.

I was really disappointed when Apple ceased their photo printing products, as I’m a keen photograopher and created a photo year book for the family each year using the Apple service. I’d been doing this for 10 years or so and had built up a collection of albums, all with a similar style. It had become a ‘thing’. The company behind Motif are the photo printing company that Apple used for their photo products. I’ve just recieved my first photo book from Motif, and it’s almost identical to the photo books that I recieved from Apple, but the cost was a bit cheaper as Motif do give away discount vouchers. The book from Motif is the same size, and the paper and print quality is identical as that from Apple, which is to say very good, but not amazing.

Their program is very good and gives more layout options that Apple Photos did, as you can drag the photo dividers into different positions. You cannot edit the photos within the program, but I think that’s because it’s just a print extension, and is a limitation of the integration possible with Apple Photos. This doesn’t realy matter to me as my workflow is always to edit the photos first and then assemble the book.

My only slight critiscm is that the dividers between the photos are slightly thicker than the dividers with the Apple books, which I don’t find as elegant. On the whole though, I’m happy as the quality is the same, format is almost identical and they’re a bit cheaper.
