Amazed!

I’ve had my 2TB my cloud drive for several years. That meant I had the original firmware partnered with the blue coloured ‘my cloud’ app. It never ever worked properly. We have over 40,000 pictures and videos and trying to view them using the app was always clunky. It wouldn’t read the dates some photos were taken and so photos were disorganised, high efficiency photos wouldn’t display (now the iPhone’s default file type) Live Photo’s wouldn’t display either, the video part of the photo would display separate to the photo.

Because of all this and more (painfully slow transfer speeds, login bugs etc.) the my cloud drive has sat unplugged and unused for a year or so. I decided to plug it in recently just to see if any firmware updates had arrived and to my surprise my very old my cloud drive was offered this ‘OS 5’ update along with a new app for iPhone and iPad and a much improved web interface. After transferring 100s of GBs of photos and videos to the drive I can not believe the difference. All the above mentioned issues have been resolved for me.

I did a full wipe and reset after performing the update to minimise any potential issues with indexing etc.

Thank you Western Digital for making my drive work the way I always wanted it too!

Good, but missing features

The app it self is alright, when just wanting to view what is on your NAS Drive, however, the previous version allowed you to download to device and view photos and videos offline, however these were kept within the app itself. This was fantastic, as it allowed you to download your stored videos and movies to watch offline, all contained in one place, like other streaming services out there.

However, in this new version, this feature has been removed and downloads are now stored directly to the devices photo/video area. Now in theory, you’d say, “so what”, but in the reality, this doesn’t work. For example, if you downloaded a series from your cloud device, it stores them in your phones camera roll (iOS user example) but you cannot see the title of the video, and it doesn’t nessessarily store them in number order. And if your iOS device is set up with a connected iCloud storage, your downloaded file also then backs up into your iCloud.

Also, when downloading to your device, there’s now no way of seeing its progress, with the exception of periodic % updates, which disappear. Imagine how frustrating that is when downloading a large file, such as a film.

All of which make the feature pretty much useless.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, put the original download and store within the app feature back. Please.

Indexing a nightmare

I have a 10tb mycloud with 2.5tb of data on it, it worked great on version 3, upgraded 2 days ago and I’m currently 20% indexed and can’t access files that I need to use for a project! I’d wait for several months until the wrinkles are ironed out. This upgrade will render your files inaccessible. I guess if you’ve not got much on the device it maybe ok but I wish they’d said it will take at least a week to index 2.5tb of data! Also the fan hasn’t stopped working for several days and it’s normally quiet as a mouse, it’s in our lounge so not the end if the world but if it’s in a bedroom upgrader please beware!
