Good, but not quite perfect

I had been looking for an email client which could seamlessly handle several email accounts - gmail, exchange et al. Apple Mail would become buggy and couldnt for the life of me get Outlook to work with one of our gmail accounts. Newton is SEAMLESSLY compatible with all the accounts. After buggering about for hours with outlook, it was incredible to see it just work first time. The interface is fantastic. Really clear, crisp, shows you everything you need and nothing you dont. It also filters social media and newsletter emails which is also very handy. Yes, for a mail client, its very expensive, but £40 to take that headache away? Sold! Now… the only problem…. and its quite a major one…. You can’t drag and drop attachments into emails. Newton, you really need to sort this out, because then it would be perfect. One more issue, and it’s probably down to my computer’s settings, is that if I was to share a document by email, say from Word or Acrobat, it automatically opens Apple Mail, despite me setting my default mail client to Newton. Figure that one out...

I thought I would never need to search for an email client again

I’ve been using Newton as my main email client for a few years now - since it was still CloudMagic and free. I honestly don’t think there’s an alternative client out there that comes close to being so intuitive to use. It’s not quite perfect but it was getting there, and it was very close. It does so many things right: syncing accounts from various services completely seamlessly, clean & simple interface, platform-mobility (being able to use a single login on any device to access all your emails), snooze, send receipts, and send later, amongst many others. That makes the news that it’s shutting down all the more sad. After using Newton, my mind fills with dread at the thought of using the macOS mail app or gmail. If it’s all it would take, I would be prepared to pay a higher subscription cost to save it, although i don’t know how many other users would feel the same way.

The Best...

I’ve tried what I think must be nearly every email client out there (mainly as a futile procrastination tactic where I convice myself it’s my email client that’s making me unproductive!). I’ve tried AI-enabled clients, those with tons of features, the old school, the new, the lot.

Consistently, I find myself back with Newton. It looks great and I love how you can focus on each email with litlte distraction. It’s subtly powerful in that, whilst it looks simple, it has a load of useful features from read receipts to ’send later.’ And, importantly, it’s super fast, especially on mobile; a number of Newton’s competitors are simply too slow and it gets far too frustrating. Combined, I tend to plough through emails.

It comes with minor gripes; for example, templates would make sending multiple emails so much faster and I wish there was a mechanism to better differentiate emails; all looking the same, some tend to get lost in the noise.

And for those who say ‘this is ridiculously expensive,’ I disagree. Apple’s ecosystem is much richer for developers who put time and effort into their products and I’m more than happy to pay for quality. In my case, what works out as ‘one less coffee a month’ has made email bearable. When you consider how much you use email, it gives you some perspective.

In sum, I’ve enjoyed it and I’ll probably renew for another year.
