What’s New

Version v3.16.2

In this smaller update we are shipping lots of improvements for the notes list and cards views to make it easier to work out of those new views as well as a smaller new feature that lets you change the background color of notes, plus many smaller improvements.

NEW FEATURES:

1. "Add Notes" in Card & List Views + Context Menu
- Quickly add new notes right where you need them with the new "plus" button beside the folder or column name in both views (list and cards).
- Right-click for quick actions (open in a new window, show in Finder, move to Trash/Archive, and more).
- If you group your notes by "folder", the complete path will be displayed, so you know exactly what you are looking at.

2. Change the Background Color of Individual Notes
- Use "bg-color" and "bg-color-dark" in a note’s frontmatter to set custom background colors (supports hex and Tailwind CSS colors). Switch out of the note and back in to see the changes.

Example:
bg-color: bg-green-100
bg-color-dark: bg-green-950

More details in our help center:
https://help.noteplan.co/article/252-change-the-color-of-a-card

The background color is also displayed in the notes list and card views.

IMPROVEMENTS AND BUG FIXES

- Fixes for Images:
- Copying images from a website now correctly copies the image data instead of just a link.

- Notes List and Cards:
- Added icons for default fields (folder, date edited, date created, tags).
- Renamed "date" to "date edited" and added "date created" for.
- Improved performance showing frontmatter fields in lists and cards.

- Cards View and Folders:
- Fixed issues with dragging cards between columns.
- Corrected sub-folder sorting in list and card views (now sorted by path instead of title).
- You can now move notes between folders in the card view.

- Other Fixes and Updates:
- Added a menu item to re-add sample meeting note templates.
- Fixed UI glitches when renaming folders in the sidebar.
- Updated the internal templating plugin to fix a text replacement issue.
- Added Notes Helper as a core plugin.
- Fixed text truncation issues in various views and the API.
- Improved performance when switching between revisions and when opening large notes.
- Fixed an attachment (images) loading issue when using both web images and regular image attachments inside a note.

If you are happy with the app, please rate it, or even leave a review. This is a great way to support us, indie developers. Thanks a lot!

Interesting tool for those with ADHD/ADD

I arrived at this app having worked with countless others (Reminders; OmniFocus; Things 3; OneNote: Evernote; to name but a few). Furthermore, I have recently realised that I have executive function (EF) challenges, and I am going through a formal diagnosis process for ADHD/ADD.
This app just works with the way that my mind is wired. Having a blank page for every day it’s perfect for me, as is having an easy way to go back and review/collect any outstanding actions from previous days. Moreover, being able to keep hold of non-date sensitive materials in the undated section enables me to consider using this app for most aspects of daily planning, organisation and notetaking.
It’s early days, and I will come back and let you know how things progress, particularly because after 41 years of life, I have tried and failed at many different approaches to managing my life, all of which fall apart when they are no longer new and shiny. But, intuitively, this app is different; and yes, it will take work to maintain it, but there are a number of good indicators that I may at last have found the balance of structure, flexibility, and organisation that is compatible with the way that my mind is wired.

The app is ruined

It was five stars all the way for years. I loved this program. Now suddenly, I can’t even figure out how to use it. Fortunately on my Mac, I have the old version, which is a delight to use, and which I own. I bought it, just like I bought the program on my iPhone. I seem to be able to use the program I paid for on my Mac, but it looks like I’m not allowed to use NotePlan on my phone anymore and I can’t sync up between my phone on my Mac. That was the whole delight of the app previously. It was on all of my machines. Now I am assaulted with a proposed “read-only mode“ or I have to pay £90 a year just to be able to read my notes. That is surreal. Bear is £15 a year and Drafts is similar. These are legendary programs. They are stunning. Does the developer of NotePlan think he’s created Parallels desktop or something? That is the same price for a subscription — an entire operating system and all the software with it, including Microsoft Office Suite. NotePlan is the same price as Parallels. It doesn’t seem to be connected to reality. And now, the new version of the app appears to have written over NotePlan 2 on my phone, which I owned outright — so now I can’t use it on my phone anymore, even though it was mine . He appears to have disabled ‘restore purchase’. I have never seen that before. And I don’t think that’s even legal. Please do not write a glib comment about helping me to find a workflow. Just please restore the previous app which belongs to me.

Thank you for your rating. The best place to get help is, however, writing to our support email address: hello@noteplan.co.

Apparently, you have purchased in the past the previous version of NotePlan (which is not maintained since years), but now downloaded the new version.

To fix this, you need to download the correct version from your "purchased" view of the App Store app. The old version is since years not available for purchase on the App Store.

However, please keep in mind, the old version is not maintained and we urge users to upgrade. We can't keep supporting an app forever that was purchased once in the past. This is the risk you take for one-time-purchase products.

Best,
Eduard

Excellent so far

I’m really impressed with this app. Having used many many notes and task apps over the years, I had been using iOS Notes to keep track of information but was getting very frustrated with lack of features (for instance ability to link between notes, ease of formatting, control how formatting is copied) and of course any tasks that emerged while note taking had to be copied and pasted to the top of each note and then reviewed periodically. NotePlan has all of the features I was missing and more, as it brings together notes, task management, and basic timeblocking into one coordinated and easy to use space. I’m also impressed with the introductory “how to” information — I highly recommend taking the time to engage with this early on as you may otherwise miss key features when getting set up. With respect to daily/weekly planning and time management, it isn’t as intuitive or calming to use as Sunsama (my previous task manager), but it does so many more things and is included in my Setapp subscription, so I’m very happy to have made the switch.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your kind review and for taking the time to write one. I’m very glad to hear you enjoy NotePlan.

If you have any trouble using the app, or if you have any other questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to let me know directly: hello@noteplan.co.
