The free NS app is your ideal travelling companion. It lets you plan your entire journey to any address in the Netherlands and keep up to date with the latest travel information and any disruptions as you go. You can also easily check where you can hire a public transport bicycle or shared car in your area, or quickly find the nearest P+R if you are travelling partly by car. Works just fine
There may have been problems in the past, but I installed the app , bought a ticket with a UK credit card, and transferred it to Apple Wallet in less than 5 minutes. Plenty of timetable and current info as well.
Still no purchase options for foreign travellers and tourists
Whilst handy for planning your journeys it gets very frustrating and complicated if you want to actually buy tickets. Given that that the app works in English you would imagine the purchase options that have been translated and show up would actually work. Unfortunately you end up going through the order system, putting in all your details and then on the last page are asked to select a bank for payment from and it pops up with a list of Dutch banks. No credit or debit card options, no foreign banks. I thought I must have done it wrong and went back through the whole process a number of times to see if there were any options I had missed. I have never been anywhere in the world where something a big as the national rail system is as backwards as to not take these commonly accepted international forms of payment and most shops in the Netherlands now take credit and debit cards and many even Apple Pay so it truly beggars belief. Payment methods were a bit wider but still restricted at the ticket machines in stations. If they are going to bother making an English version of their transport app to help us foreigners get around but not give us any method to buy tickets then they shouldn't include any buttons to click to buy tickets.
Can buy tickets but not supplements?!
Ok so I was able to buy tickets with my foreign credit card which is great but I realised the tickets don’t include the supplements of €2.40 for the faster trains. And there is no way to buy one. If you get checked on the train it’s a €10 fee and the red machines on the platforms only work if you have a OV-chipkaart. Being a tourist I didn’t have one so had to stick with the slower trains, or line up at the ticket machines but then what’s the point of the app!
