Description

This Patient Controller NR app is for use with Abbott non-rechargeable (NR) devices, such as Proclaim™ SCS systems, Proclaim™ DRG system, and Infinity™ DBS systems.

The Patient Controller NR app was developed by Abbott for people living with chronic pain and neurologic disorders who are treated by Abbott neuromodulation devices. This application helps patients conveniently manage the programs prescribed by their physicians and uses Bluetooth® wireless technology to communicate between the implanted stimulator and the Patient Controller NR app. The Patient Controller NR app runs on Abbott recommended devices (as mentioned below) and is easy to use, while the wireless interface provides patients the convenience of managing prescribed stimulation settings from a familiar iOS device.

Some of the key functions available for patients include:
- Turn stimulation ON/OFF
- Select stimulation programs for changing therapy needs
- Adjust stimulation amplitude
- Check device battery
- Turn on MRI mode for MR Conditional systems
- Activate and de-activate Surgery Mode

Note:
- This application will work on select Appleǂ iPodǂ and iPhoneǂ devices running iOSǂ 12.4 or later.

App not supported on latest version of iOS

App works fine however if iOS is updated to 11.4.1 the app does not work. This means that you can’t use the app to control the generator which is a problem. Also you can’t roll back iOS easily so if you get into this position you are stuck.

Any update on a version that supports the latest iOS version would be appreciated as until then it cannot be used and generator cannot be controlled.

App needs updating for iOS 12

The app is dated, supporting iOS 11.1 ‘or later’. It states it is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod, this is not true. On my iPad, the app indicates this is an “Unsupported Device, This software is not compatible with this device.” Apple announced that 70% of mobile devices now use iOS 12. This means your app won’t work on the implant to alleviate pain relief if you’re running iOS 12.

As it uses Bluetooth, it should be compatible with all Apple devices. It’s probably not prudent to emphasise use with iPod, given the most current iPod Touch 6, introduced in July 2015, is now 4 years old, and likely to to be an unsupported device in the near future, or sooner.

Bottom line, if my father in law is going to pay for an invasive surgery specifically to utilise this technology and app, the public need to see that the app that ‘controls’ it, will be current and regularly updated to ensure it will continue to function in the delivery of pain relief control to patients. Otherwise, why pay for the operation?

Generator battery indicator

Generator battery indicator needs to show percentage and not just a tick without giving any indication of battery level left!

After a number of years the battery indicator has not been updated so you still don’t know what percent is left prior to having the battery changed over and if Abbott doesn’t care about the patients who actually have the unit inside them then maybe other manufacturers should be given a chance, very disappointed with updates which are not relevant to certain patients, like given a load of iPhone's the app to use, I am using the iPhone X max and only the iPhone X and certain other ones are able to use the app, which still needs a representative to upload your information, yet again another crap upgrade which hasn’t been fought out properly.
