Great app!! missing a lil thing but great!!

I’m a little sad about the lack of obvious ways to note flying or climbing speed as different from walking speed on character sheets, but other than that I have no complaints! This app is pretty easy to use, even for a beginner like me! The ability to fully customise everything (yay homebrews!!) also puts it way above Beyond in my eyes. Spells and items are either easily accessible via lookup or equally easy to input yourself through customisation features. I’ve seen some others say the UI is kinda clunky on iPad, but I find it great for accessibility (large buttons & text = dyspraxia & dyslexia friendly :})

Developer Response ,

Hello SpaceCadet! Thanks for the review. As far as differentiating between different speeds, I am assuming your talking about the paper sheet. I do agree that is an issue and something that I will add to the list of things that we need to look into. As far as the digital sheet goes, you should be able to press on your speed box iin the first page with your stats on and it will pop up an alert that shoes all the different speed values you have. Hope that helps! We definitely think our customization options are one of the best on the dnd market and I am glad you think so! As far as the clunkiness goes, that is something that we continue to work on and improve, so I am confident that is something that we will improve, step by step

Lots of potential, but not entirely complete

Reading responses to previous reviews, the title is a given. The developers have mentioned that they are still working on completing the app. As it currently stands though it still functions very well for character sheets, though it is a bit slow at times, struggling to scroll through pages at times. Very much looking forward to when the compendium is complete as this looks like it will also feature an easy way to look up spells and items.

The only thing I feel this is really missing as a character creator is information on all races, classes and backgrounds (especially backgrounds! It only features information on the Acolyte). This app feels like it could be a great way to streamline the creation process and to store all of your characters.

I am very much enjoying the app as it is and I feel it will keep getting better. Definitely, for me at least, worth it’s current price. It’s convenient and contains a lot of useful features and I feel it will only keep getting better as the developers continue to add to it.

Developer Response ,

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to leave a detailed review! I means a lot and keeps up going. In response to some of your comments, I think I can help clear up some of your concerns and actually solve some of your problems immediately.

1. Content/1 Background : This has been a very hard one to explain. We have tried a lot of different things to explain this but nothing seems to really sink in. In short, Dungeons and Dragons is essentially an intellectual property company. They make money from the content that they think up and distribute in their books. Because of that, it is against copyright rules for us to distribute this information. D&D has allowed for distribution of some of the content from the game, which is what you see in the app. This is called the Open Game License. With that out of they way, we have created a way for you to create or import content. If you join our discord channel via the invite link in the settings or the button on the first page of character creation, you can join our community and find an import file that will have more backgrounds, among many more things! If you want to create your own content, you can visit the custom creator via the top left button in the character list > creator and use the same simple process as the character creation process.

2. Lag - we are aware of this and continue to improve on this. We know that iPad struggles with this a lot more than the phone app and have some ideas on how to continually improve.

3. Its not finished : We think PrismScroll is a work of art. And a favorite saying of mine is that "Art is never finished, it is only abandoned". We are still working on PrismScroll. It is not finished. We don't even have a finish line in mind because we want to continue to push closer and closer perfection. That is how we have been working on PrismScroll from the start and will continue to do so as long as we are around!

Feature-Rich, Bad UI

Its clear the developer cares very deeply about the app and the regular updates and deep feature set reflect that, but it’s hard to get past the clunky, laggy UI, lacking the smart information density and adaptability of Fight Club or the more precise hierarchical layout of Critico, while completely underutilizing the space of an iPad.

Certain pages shouldn’t lag when browsing or flicking between them and yet on an iPad Pro 2nd Gen they do, the spell, equipment and compedium browsing features are surprisingly clunky and over-designed in their layouts and filtering features, important character features become quite spread out across the many pages of the app making them easy to forget or utilize, option menus take up the entire screen despite only having a few small options, the list of weird UI mistakes goes on.

While Fight Club doesn’t have as advanced custom content capabilities, it is far, far smarter at displaying spell and item databases and keeping important information together while properly utilizing the screen space of a device, making it hard to recommend this.

Developer Response ,

Hello Takanu! Thank you for taking the time to write this constructive review. I appreciate the time and effort put in to show that you care about wanting PrismScroll to be better. I agree completely that some areas of the app require some UI love. Especially for iPad! Currently our distribution of use is around 80-20 (iPhone/iPad) which is why the iPhone UI is a lot more crisp. If you compare the two, youll see that the iPad version is pretty much a stretched out version of the iPhone app, which I suppose is barely a level up from the apps that just give you a phone sized frame surrounded by black! But one thing that I believe is going to win the day, maybe not today or maybe not tomorrow, but in my opinion, inevitably, is the continuous improvement of the app. Fight club hasnt had a content/product improvement update that wasn't bug fixes since June and Critico! since May. We are dedicated to becoming the best D&D creator available on mobile. I think we are really close for phones. With phones beening on the cusp of being complete, we can direct our full focus on the iPad, tackling the device that more serious users prefer if they can because of the real estate. I totally understand if you use the other apps while we continue to improve, they're great products. But eventually, I know that we are going to be better sooner or later, in all aspects. Thanks again and I hope you stick with us on this journey or pop in every once in a while to check out our progress!
