Newly updated realMyst:Masterpiece Edition v2.2 - polished, tuned, and better than ever!

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition is a beautifully updated version of realMYST for today’s Mac computers - celebrating the 20th anniversary of Myst! The models and textures have been reconstructed to provide an amazing graphical experience. The environments have been enhanced to provide dynamic water, weather, lighting, foliage, focus, and more. The interface has been redesigned to provide an enjoyable way to explore for both novices and gamers.

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition - this is not your father's Myst! It’s been 20 years since Myst became your world, and there's never been a better time to revisit the Ages. This newly refreshed and rebuilt version of realMyst is all-things Myst, but amazingly more real. You can explore anywhere, unfettered, and in realtime! Pick your own path through the forest on Myst Island. Listen to the crickets as the sun sets in the Channelwood Age. Relax in the falling leaves in the Selenitic Age. Spin around for a full panoramic tour of Sirrus’ throne room. Seek shelter from the thunderstorm in Stoneship Age.

And If you’ve ever been overwhelmed by realtime 3D - too many controls or too much motion - realMyst has something for you! You have the option to play the game just like the original Myst - with a simple point and click! Point where you want to go - click the mouse and you move through the world seamlessly to the new location. As a tribute to Myst’s 20th anniversary we’ve also added the original Myst images when you play in this Classic mode. Hold down the shift key and the original Myst image pops up, so you can see the difference and fondly remember that early Myst experience.

We’ve added plenty of new features to enhance and assist you on your journey. So whether you’re visiting Myst for the first time or you want to remember the first time - there’s never been a better reason to lose yourself and let the surrealistic Ages of realMyst become your world.

Over heats on my MacBook Pro 2017

I’m using a 2017 MacBook Pro with touchbar… way above the necessary minimum requirements… considering this is an old game it just make my laptop extremely hot with the fan whizzing away.

Why is this drawing so much processing power? (on the lowest setting)

I have played the Wittness on this laptop and for the most part the fan is quiet (set on medium graphics)

I’ve played this on my iPad - granted that does get hot, but at least it has not fan.

So disappointing that an old game is demanding so much more power than it needs.

Immersive, rewarding and no overheating

Myst is enjoyable, immersive and solvable. It took me 25 hours to complete with two hints (elavator and vault problems) for the 7 worlds. It is quicker with hints. It is unquestionably my favourite, strongest “problem-solving” app I’ve played and is a highly logical universe.

There is a strong “detective style” problem throughout the game - you have two suspects and investigate the back-story. Here the developers cleverly weave an emotional angle into calculated problem solving. My advice, think like a detective (I’m just guessing how detectives think!).

Some of the worlds are purely sumptuous: the space-age desert island and a water/forest world. It all adds up to an immersive experience.

Myst problems have parallels with professional problem solving (I do computational genetics), for example, defining your hypothsis, testing the hypothesis one “variable” at a time, folding in seemingly unconnected information, i.e. correlations, and being confident of a simple solution. Myst does the idea of “dividing a big problem into smaller units" for you.

Base-camp, Myst Island, is by far the best set of problems, although IMO some of the worlds could be a bit more challenging.

*NOTE* There are at least 2 solutions to the final “Rime age” problem (“his” and “hers”), all Google searches I saw claim there is only one solution. The “one solution club” leaves a disjunction with the logic of the game.**

Never finished - yet!

Lost count of the times I have played this game over the years. I have got through what I guess is about half way but I did need some hints. No matter the game is so visually and sonically sumptuous that I'm happy to wander round time and time again. One star off becaue basically it's too hard for me but otheriwse it is perfect. Lights out, sound up-it's immersive and I love it. Just wish they'd bring Riven up to date (sequel-more worlds to explore)
