Thourghly enjoyable

Never played the original version in the 90s as i was not into FPS games but watch a lot of tech reviews that use the original as a base to run tests on cpu and Gpu benchmarks and wondered if there awe anything similar on IPad and found the like for like retro game and am thoroughly enjoying it. There are a few glitches which are understandable as the capabilities of a tablet are now were near that of even the basic gaming laptop ie disappearing enemies and guns not firing at the right time and the joystick sometimes doesn’t register the players touch and the game completely freezing. There are no secrets like better weapons possibly for this reason. These are more problems due to hardware limitations and not programming otherwise this is an excellent port of on of the first FPS dungeon crawlers thanks

A love letter to doom

This is, as you can tell quite quickly from playing it, its nothing more than a love letter to doom; a very simple game, boring after minutes of play, but rooted in the spirit of those old classics.

The levels are procedurally generated and incredibly repetitive, featuring pre-built rooms in differing textures. The gunplay is awful, unrefined and janky, not at all like dooms limited but polished mechanics. Although it is nice to see that the ads are present but not obtrusive as has been the case in almost all free-to-play games on mobile.

To be honest, what do you expect? its free! and is definitely worth the download time for a few minuits of fun, but it is limited to that. I can definitely tell that it is a game made with passion and a wonderful breath of fresh air in comparison to todays decayed corpse of a mobile games market and if the levels were custom designed i would love to play this game for much longer, but the ultra repetitive environment in the end is what kills the game.

Fun, with some caveats

So far I enjoy the simplicity of this game, however the levels can be a bit repetitive. I do not mind how unlike Doom you cannot interact with buttons and doors etc. but level design is important. Also, the sawed-off shotgun blocks my view so I cannot dodge enemy attacks, making it a useless powerful weapon.
