That's why we've carefully crafted each of our courses to include what's practical, relevant, and useful for the language you are learning.

Good lessons but average app

I am learning Italian and I also use other language learning apps. I like the structure of the lessons in Rocket Italian. Unlike another leading programme, you get clear explanations of grammar which I find helpful. The lessons so far have focused on conversations which has been good.

However, the voice recognition is temperamental and it doesn't always register when I have said something. When saying numbers (e.g. when telling the time) the app writes them as figures not words and penalises me because they aren't words. Very odd! I just completed all the tests for one lesson and the app says I haven't completed any of them. The user interface feels old fashioned and navigation is tedious.

If you can overlook the technical and design issues and focus on the lessons this should be a helpful way to learn a language. Hopefully someone is working to improve the app itself in future versions.

The letters/symbols are too small to see properly

I’ve loved using this app to learn Japanese from scratch. The bite size lessons and option to record yourself pronouncing words and even participating in conversations is great. My only gripe is I feel it discriminates, albeit unwittingly, against those of us whose eye sight is not particularly good. There is no option to increase the size of letters or symbols. A real let down to an otherwise really thoughtful app.

Not as good as I hoped for

I am trying my luck to get more fluent in French with this app. I have been learning the language with the help of other apps, Busuu and Duolingo mainly, so I consider my grammar and vocabulary as decent.

The app’s design is not marvellous but completely acceptable. The general layout of the lessons is cut towards a tourist at the moment, trying to teach a visitor the basics to survive in a French speaking country. What the course currently lacks is explaining small pieces of grammar, but I hope that will come with later lessons 🤞.

So far I have listened to the first four chapters, and I hope very much that the course improves. Two people do the lessons, one is British, the other French. The British guy comes across as smug and waffles a lot without really teaching me listening to and talking in French so far. In addition, he pronounces some words utterly wrong (it’s actually rather painful to hear). The French woman is, naturally, much better. But I am left with two versions of pronunciation of which I know one to be wrong (btw, has nothing to do with accent!). As a complete newby I would never know which pronunciation is correct.

It’s an expensive course, I expect accuracy in the teaching - and less boredom. I have come across Podcast which are free and better.

Developer Response ,

Thanks so much for your review, fwf-scot. We hope that you are finding the lessons helpful in tuning your ear to French, and perfecting your pronunciation. Regarding Paul's pronunciation specifically, please don't hesitate to send through examples of any words/phrases that you are unhappy with, and we will check them from here (support@rocketlanguages.com). All the best with your language learning!
