There's plenty of free content, including a sample crag for most areas. The app has a map that includes all the crag and directory information from UKClimbing.com, so that you can now find a crag, shop, wall, guide or place to stay easily when you are out and about. The app also contains the UKC and UKH Photos of the Week.
== Version 3.0.7 ==
- Performance improvements on older devices with many crags installed
- The search history for the search bar is pre-populated with area and country names now, making it easier to filter the lists
== Version 3.0 ==
There are a lot of changes in this version, but this is the main one; we no longer sell packages. Instead, users with an active Rockfax membership can access any content they like from the Rockfax catalogue, and soon from the SMC catalogue too. Visit the Rockfax website for more information.
- The search bar has a search history. You'll only ever need to type 'offwidth crack overhang' once in the routes tab now.
- Crags can now be filtered using route type and rock type, so you can write queries like 'england sandstone sport'.
- We've revamped the crag list to make it work better with the new download-what-you-like model. You can now find crags you've not yet installed directly in My Crags by searching for them.
- The Downloads section needed some love too, so this has been redesigned.
- When using any of our geo-located our hand-drawn maps, you can now open any arbitrary location within its bounds in a navigation app, such as Apple Maps - or just copy the coordinates to the clipboard. Long-press anywhere on the Rockfax map to open the menu.
Ratings and Reviews
Very good useful app only one critacism
The only issue i found with the app and i don't know if its because i’m missing something is the ability to minimise the specific guides and countries in the my crags section. For example if i owned two england guides, a greece guide, an italy guide and a norway guide. I would have two scroll down through all 4 previous guides to reach the norway guide. The ability to be able to just select a country and then select a guide book then select crag etc would be very handy.
Developer Response ,
I'm pleased to hear you're finding the app useful.
It was after careful consideration that we decided to layout the crag list as we have (it will allow us to add crag filters to that view), but it does indeed result in a long list.
Have you noticed the search history that the search bar offers? This lists approximately the last 15 search queries you've used, and is intended to replace the functionality you're looking for.
You can also search on rock type (gritstone, sandstone, gneiss etc), or route type (sport, trad, bouldering etc), and soon location-based search terms (sheffield, yorkshire etc).
Crashes every time I try to open it
This app seemed great until I added an extra filter option to either show trad or sport climbs in Dorset, I had purchased the entire Dorset booklet as such and all worked ok. We are climbing specifically in Portland which is known for its sport climbing and many site are full of sport climbers so we were looking for an area more suited to read climbing, added the filter no problem as described then as soon as I turned it on the app crashed, tried to open it and the app crashed, reset my phone and tried again and the app crashed, even deleted the app re downloaded updated purchases re downloaded the booklet and tried the filter again - app crashed. Advertised as being suited to this type of search but now can’t even open the app to send a trouble shooting query to the designer....... also as seen in other notes the climb length would be handy, it does sometimes show the height of the top of the crag but not a noted distance for each climb which is a bit disappointing. In general it’s a good idea but needs a bit of work to make it worth while. And a fix for the issue would be great
Developer Response ,
Apologies for the filter crash. This has been fixed in the newest release (2.3.2).
Tons of Info - Expertly Presented
An incredible app with a wealth of information. Despite so much info, everything is displayed cleverly so that it doesn’t feel cluttered. Very impressed.
Yes the cost of the different areas can add up, but the slickness of the app and the data within makes it totally worth it.
