If you're searching for a fully-featured chartplotter for your iPad or iPhone, SeaNav is definitely worth considering. The app is free to download and includes a single chart covering the Solent, perfect for evaluation. If you're satisfied with the app, you can purchase additional charts for your specific regions. After testing several alternatives like Navionics and Savvy Navvy, I opted for SeaNav. The interface is intuitive, clear, and free from unnecessary screen clutter. Charts:SeaNav's UK charts are based on official UKHO vector charts, allowing you to click on charted objects to access bearing, distance, and other relevant information. The app also offers the ability to overlay Google Maps or satellite images for land areas not covered by UKHO charts, which is a particularly handy feature. Navigation:SeaNav provides two primary navigation modes: sailing to a single point or following a predefined route. You can easily reverse the direction of routes, making it simple to reuse the same route for both inbound and outbound journeys. NMEA Integration:The app supports NMEA data (including GPS, AIS, and Wind Instruments) via your local network using TCP or UDP network packets. This feature is especially useful for providing speed and location data when using an iPad without built-in GPS. Wind Instruments:SeaNav features a side panel that displays both Apparent and True wind information. True wind data can be sourced either via the internet (for an additional charge) or through a local NMEA feed. AIS (Automatic Identification System):The app offers two AIS options: internet-based AIS or a local NMEA feed. While the internet option requires connectivity and may introduce slight delays, the local NMEA feed offers more accurate, real-time updates. Note that AIS is only available as an in-app purchase.

Now ‘embiggened’ for iPhone X!

With the app now making full use of of the larger screen of the X iPhones, with the added weather detail, it’s even better! With AIS plotted as well, this app has much to offer with charts fairly priced too. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s going to be added next.

Hi Mark, Thanks for the great feedback. We have listened and the new version of SeaNav now supports full screen on the iPhone X. Its a free update. The latest version also adds an amazing animated weather view showing wind, waves, rain and pressure out to 10 days time.
Updating pain

I’m a bit torn, but my rating is dominated by the difficulty (unless I’m missing something) of downloading and updating the charts. After you buy them you can’t just download them and go, but have to scroll around the country uploading them in batches, plus smaller charts will only download if you zoom right in.Even after a year I still find the odd teeny chart I’ve never downloaded. Now this is fine if you arrive at the place with an Internet connection, but less so otherwise if you don’t have a chart or have an old version. So IMHO needs a button to say “I don’t have a data cap please download all the charts I’ve bought” and another to update them…Spent several hours (!) today updating phone and iPad. Really had enough scrolling around and zooming in and out of a U.K. map for about a year… but bet I’m still missing a few.Would also be nice to have a legend for symbols and colours (plus maybe a brief chart reading explainer) to let less maritime people look around out of curiosity, without bothering me… pretty please…
Developer Response
Hi John,Thanks for your review and feedback. There is already a button in SeaNav to download all the charts for an area like other apps do. Go to Settings/Manage Charts and tap "Download charts". This will show and download all the charts for an area (at all scales) in one go and also let you see which charts you have ( green outline) and which are not downloaded (red outline). I hope this helps and please contact us directly at help@pocketmariner.con if you need more advice. We aim to get same day reply 24x7 for queries to our help desk.

Initial set up problems had me struggling with this app and I’d just about given up until contacted by the developer who got me up and running. Great customer service and I’m going to enjoy using this new found wealth of information in the bays and inlets of the Western Isles. Thank you Steve Bennett, much appreciated.
