A good port of a great game

I’m not much of a gamer but SimSity was one of my favourite games back when I was a PC user, so when this appeared on the app store it seemed like a great option to get, and don’t get me wrong, it is. There are however a few problems that have been mentioned by others before. This is evidentlty a PC game, and whoever ported this didn’t change any of the PC controls to more mac friendly ones. It makes references to keys that don’t exist (what is an insert key?!) and doesn’t support “right click” properly, and as such the zoom control is really wild. You’re either in space or at street level, any finer zoom control requires use of the rather fiddly manual zoom buttons. You really want a two button mouse, but that’s just me being pedantic.

That being said, it does not seem buggy and is defintely a great buy. It’s also one of the best PC-Mac ports out there.

Runs Smoothly on M1 Mac

The game runs very well on my M1 MBA. In the before times, I bought Aspyr's port of SimCity 4 for PPC Macs when it was first released. The fact that they've maintained the game for 20 years - and made it native to M-series processors - is very impressive. The game runs far better than it did on my Blueberry G3 iMac, and remains as good as ever. Cities Skylines still hasn't captured the magic of SimCity, and SC4 (alongside SC2000) remains one of the best entries.

There are a few reviews complaining about the controls. Bear in mind that this game is 20 years old and does not necessarily have the control schemes that have been popularised in the last decade. It takes some getting used to if you didn't play this back in the day. Do I have nostalgia glasses on? You bet. If you like SC4 or have patience for older games, you'll be fine.
