Description

Life between myths. Clans, cows, choices.

The spiritual successor to King of Dragon Pass, Six Ages combines interactive stories and turn-based strategy. Your small clan’s survival depends on its relations with the warring gods and their followers. Play involves actions such as improving pastures, exploration, trading with your neighbors, and raiding. You can even travel to the Otherworld to visit your gods. You also need to deal with crises ranging from marauding dinosaurs to diplomatic requests to illicit love. Your choices have a politico-economic impact, but some consequences might not be obvious for decades.

It’s set in Glorantha (the world of RuneQuest, HeroQuest, and 13th Age), where the laws of physics are subordinate to the whims of the gods and spirits.

Six Ages is immensely replayable, thanks to over 400 interactive scenes with multiple outcomes. Short episodes and automatic saving mean you can play even when you only have a minute or two. The built-in saga writes down the story for you. And advisors with distinctive personalities help you track your cows.

148Apps: “… absolutely worth playing. … Six Ages uniquely weaves an astounding amount of of narrative, lore, and nonbinary decision-making into its gameplay that makes it feel truly unique and special.”

Touch Arcade: “… if you want to get lost in a world full of meticulous details and gameplay that isn’t quite like anything else, you’ll want to hop on to Six Ages as soon as possible.”

Pocket Tactics: “Six Ages holds a wealth of wonders few other games can match.”

One of Rock Paper Shotgun’s top 100 PC games of all time: “All your choices create a curious and gnarled tree of a story … that is sometimes funny, and sometimes a little distressing.”

Ben Silverman: “A heady mix of “Civilization” and a Choose Your Own Adventure game… Ridiculously deep and “just one more turn” addictive…”

When you complete Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind, you can continue your clan’s saga in Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out.

The game is completely accessible via VoiceOver.

King of Dragon Pass - Scythian style!

All in all, this game is very good, nearly as good as KoDP. Without the tribal mechanics of KoDP I can’t say it’s as deep politically but it does have the bonus of Wheels and Rams rather than just all Orlanthi and a handful of Ducks you can’t really ally with save for one event. However, this can’t be helped considering the setting, which is thousands of years before King of Dragon Pass. I do like the setting, however - it’s interesting to see a campaign prior to the Darkness and among the non-Dara Happan Yelmians, I can’t wait to see what’s next! Perhaps it’s a little less deep lore wise but there is certainly much less written on Saird, who I think the Riders are ancestors to, than Orlanthi. Tribes are hinted at when you ask the other clans to found a city or a kingdom - “Maybe our grandchildren can found one” - so I hope my prediction is right.

I have mixed feelings about this game

Like I said I really do have mixed feelings about this game. On one level I like it and I’ve had many hours of fun with it. On another level it’s frustrating as hell. the game is, in my opinion, severely loaded in favour of the computer. You almost never get ahead after the first few years in the valley while computer generated clans keep getting richer and more powerful while you go downhill no matter what choices you make and I’ve pretty well made them all. You go for peace and you get slaughtered. You go for a balance of farming, combat, worship, trade and sacrifice and nothing works. The advice you get is pointless some of the time such as when they suggest you have somebody on the circle that worships a particular god only to discover that you don’t actually have an option for somebody that worships that god or you’re told you need to explore and you find nothing while other clans have no trouble finding stuff. No wonder the developer says he doesn’t want to give the plot away. There’s virtually no way to win that’s why in my opinion.

Developer Response ,

It’s a difficult game, even on the “Easier” difficulty. And we can’t tell you, a moisture farmer, that you win by trusting the Force. But we know that players are winning (some multiple times so I can’t give an exact number). sixages.com/tips/ has some tips on how to do well enough that you’ll get your X-wing.

Deeper

More of the same formula as king of dragon pass but more fully realised depth and variation. Battles in particular have much more variation and varied outcomes. Epic! Also great to explore unknown lore of Glorantha.

Edit: a few weeks in- the initial similarities to king of dragon pass give way to a realisation that this is their new masterpiece. Nuance and depth abound- every corner has been refined and the love in the design is deeply evident. Surprises around every corner and new large world changing events make it all feel dangerous and uncertain. Success feels as it does in real life- an exhilarating combination of high attention, skill and luck (although you feel as you learn that you can influence your own luck).
