Ratings and Reviews
Constantly innovates and inclusive
It’s a platform I feel that allows you to see the talent behind work giving them a face and allowing you to connect. It’s a platform that always listens to its user base and innovates. I don’t feel like just a number on their platform.
As a creative it’s allowed me to showcase my work, build connections, apply for jobs, get answers to questions from people in my industry and attend some great events.
I’ve even been to a dots masterclass event where I got feedback on my portfolio from people from Apple, google, wire and pentagram allowing me to polish up and really improve my portfolio. As they say we are all works in progress.
The dots is the place to be so that I can always get better and connect with creatives. Maybe it’s where you can too
Great for networking, not for applying
This application still needs some work by the developers, who need to decide if this is app is a social media platform, like Facebook, or a professional job site that accepts the user profile as an application, like on LinkedIn. At the moment it is the former as I have an issue with the emails I am being sent:
When I receive and email that has a job I would like to apply to, I tap on it, that will take me to the website, like many other apps. (A really good app will copy that link and open it the app). This works fine, but you can not apply for that job in the website you must use the app. If it is already installed, no problem, this should take you straight to the app, but it takes you to the App Store. And even if you open it via the App Store you lose the link, meaning you are searching for the job all over again.
The biggest problem is when you want to apply for the job in the app, you discover it can only be done on that companies website! Making the entire process of creating a professional profile with skills, experience, qualifications and uploaded CVs, obsolete.
So if the developers want this app to be like LinkedIn, there is still a long way to go. Look at what the biggest studios want to see in their CVs and cover letters, and structure the profile creations in the same way, that would be the best start to creating an amazing app.
Decent but needs work
A good alternative to LinkedIn for creatives. But as a graduate the ability to show colleagues for projects isn’t really interesting.
More so job searches are for a grad, and here The Dots is both interesting and lacking compared to LinkedIn. With more interesting creative roles and companies but lacking the easy application system now in-built to LinkedIn (Easy Apply).
Pressing on ‘new job’ notifications just takes you to the Home Screen, with no specific app page for jobs, just a small list on the home page. If your main use of The Dots is to find a new/first job then unfortunately it isn’t the most catered for. It’s great for exposure and people working in publishing/editorial/fashion but as a UX/Experience/Service designer it seems redundant to LinkedIn.
