What’s New
Version 4.38.4
Exciting new features including Streak Freezes, Zen Mode, Inventory, and Contact list pairing. Also a huge fix to various reports of studios closing after 5 minutes. Streak freezing allows a user to save their streak if they missed a day in the past. When you play a studio, there’s a chance you may find a streak freeze. Zen Mode allows you to opt out of Leagues, pausing your ranking until you opt back in. Contact list pairing allows you to find friends to follow on Tonic.

Ratings and Reviews
Love Tonic
I absolutely love Tonic! It has helped motivate me to practice piano more and enjoy it in the process. I have also met a lot of lovely like-minded people from all walks of life, of all different ages and abilities and we all boost each other’s musical learning journey by listening to each other’s playing, giving tips and suggestions to help improve playing plus sheet music recommendations. I highly recommend Tonic to people who struggle to find motivation for practice.
Seems very much a work in progress
This app has potential to aid musicians practice but at the moment has some quite annoying fixed behaviours. For one thing, the animated avatars are just silly and annoying. Also, why does it always say in an open studio the meaningless phrase ‘Just jamming’, that can’t be modified by the user? Why can’t users add works not yet included in the list of works that it uses? It is a bit silly that the different movements of long pieces are listed as separate works. Typically I will cover several movements in a practice session, so I will not be practicing the movement first indicated.
For the listening to others function, I’ve found the audio is always cutting in and out. Also, there needs to be more of a variety of reactions that can be made, beyond just the ‘heart’. You might think something was worth of praise, but not loveable. The ‘challenge’ that I took part in never disappears, it comes up centre screen every time. The FAQ includes an abbreviation ‘WIP’ that it does not define. What’s that about? In short there are a lot of these problem behaviours in the app, which seems very much a work in progress.
Fantastic Tool
It is genuinely one of the best decisions to download this app I’ve ever made. I am very competitive and the “gamifying” of practice, through practice streaks and medals and the like is excellent motivation for me.
You don’t even have to use it to play for other people, you can create private rooms just so you can track your practice time and consistency.
Or you can open your room up and have lovely people join you. (And they will).
Yes it is lacking some features and is clearly a work in progress. But they keep adding things and I’m sure it will continue to improve.
