Trach - Trachtenberg 4+

I’m so glad a decent Trachtenberg method app has been developed. I’ve owned the book for years but consistent practice is needed to master this skill. As there are no other comparable apps out there, and this does exactly what it needs to it has to be five stars.

There are minor ways to develop this app, perhaps allowing the use of the Trachtenberg dots to carry 1s and 2s (currently i use my fingers). Highlighting ‘the number’ being calculated, I have minor dyscalculus and get confused sometimes on 6 digit numbers. A draw pad to write the numbers in, so I don’t have to take my eye off ‘the number’. A beginner mode for the hard numbers (3, 4 and 8) taking you through the steps. Ultimately these improvements would make it a premium app, probably worthy of a subscription (which I hate). In its current form the app works and is worth all £4.99.

How I calculated my 5 star rating
Frustration: The app has no glitches or errors.
Desire to use: I want to open this app all the time, even if I just have 5 free minutes.
Purpose: Designed to teach the Trachtenberg method of maths this app does exactly that by teaching and practicing or learning and confirming understanding.

Having assumed this was the complete system, I bought it. I read the in-app ‘info’ which outlined what Trachtenberg maths is and I assumed that this was what I got with the app purchase. Sadly, only multiplication is taught and tested and I feel cheated as £5 is too much for only a part-system which is useful but a curio. I am hoping that this is being actively developed and I won’t have to wait too long for the full system, at which point I would revise this review.

I love the Trachtenberg system and also own the book. I had a comprehensive iPhone app which taught and tested the complete system - it was fantastic but the developer stopped supporting it for successive iOS upgrades and I stopped practicing.
