Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag.

It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and keeps videos playing in the background.

Note: The "can read information from webpages" text in the permission section is just unfortunate wording. Vinegar needs access to the web page to find the YouTube player and replace it. It's not doing anything creepy!

(By the way, check out Vinegar's companion app, Baking Soda. It's basically a less powerful version of Vinegar, but it works on all websites other than YouTube.)

What’s New

Version 2.1.4

- Vinegar should now work with SponsorBlock and the Return YouTube Dislike script.
- You can now double-click on the video to enter full screen mode.

Good but doesn’t update viewing history

Much better viewing experience on iPhone and iPad - Good for sending to Apple TV too. No ads, quick, responsive and high quality. Picture in Picture wet welcome. Only one downside I’ve found is your YT history is not updated for videos watched via Vinegar. If you still use the native player or app you can get repetition of suggested videos the system doesn’t know you’ve already seen. Apart from that, excellent!

Almost perfect

Works great with exception of a couple things… firstly on Mac it doesn’t pause and play when hitting the space bar something I do often. On iPhone I was hoping it would enable PiP but it still doesn’t work I guess this is YT overriding it

Developer Response ,

Play/pause with the space bar should work, unless you entered full screen mode. The workaround is you can either use the "K" key for play/pause, or use the "F" key to enter pseudo-full screen mode. (Space bar works in pseudo-full screen mode.)

The PiP issue should be fixed in version 2.0.3, can you double check?

Make this available on Mac 10.

If it's working on iOS 15 on my phone, please make it work on MacOS 10. I have other extensions that work on Mac/Safari, so why can't this please?

Developer Response ,

This app is available on the Mac! Just search for Vinegar in the Mac App Store 🙂 It's a universal purchase so you don't have to pay twice.
