WeChat 17+

WeChat is a great app for efficiency because it allows you to type using the keyboard. The app also allows you to do voice, and video calls using your mac. The app allows you to open links and recently provides access to your friend circle. However, the app does not recognize correctly when there are multiple webcams and microphones. The app backup and sync feature do not work correctly. You might lose messages, and be careful with that. The app is still very restricted when it comes to feature parity with the mobile version of WeChat.

Seems the Mac version does not allow you to watch any of the live streaming channels? pity

Pros: Has its own bank account and can also be used in numerous ways to pay for items in China through bank transfer to individuls, groups, and businesses. It's highly unlikely to find a retailer, even a street vendor, who won't take WeChat payment.
Has simple, but limited capacity transfer for videos (currently set at 5 minute duration), IP telephony and video, chat functions, "moments' (which are highlights shared with all friends) and translation through multiple languages. It also integrates with other Chinese apps such as DiDi Taxi which will update chosen recipients of your current taxi service.
The desktop version can only be accessed when authorisd by the phone app. The phone app is where all payments are made.

Totally indispensible in China.

Cons: Centrally distributed and available for Chinese government inspection. However, at least this is acknowledged by the government. How is it with FB and Google these days ;-)
