Wondery: Discover Podcasts 12+

I love Wondery and I subscribe to the Wondery+ version and I’ve learned so much over the last few months that I’ve been using it and there’s definitely shows and series I’ve been recommending to people and discussing with them.

However, this app is an absolute garbage fire. It crashes almost constantly, sometimes mid episode—to the point that recently I can’t even listen to one downloaded episode without it force closing itself. Not to mention that half the time episodes either don’t download or you can’t download an entire series in one go because the app literally can’t handle it; even when I’m at home with a stable internet connection it still can’t manage it.

Again, great content and if I knew more people that were into podcasts I would be recommending this all the time, but the app and interface itself needs some serious work.

I really joy the content on Wondery and think it’s value for money. However I think you are better off paying for your subscription via another app like Apple Podcasts.

The issues I have with the app are:
- when I’m listening to a series it will start the next episode 3/4 through even though I haven’t started it
- the my shows section only sorts by alphabetical order. That means there is no way of seeing which shows have been recently updated (for example on Apple they rank each show my latest update and you can see a list of all episodes in order)
- if you start a download of an episode you can’t leave the page until it is finished (or even change season)
- it doesn’t always register when you have finished episodes so leaves them appearing half played
- you can’t delete downloads from the episode pages

Things I really like:
- the drop down menus for the seasons
- it’s easy to access the details for series and episodes
- again the content
- the categories on the front page (very easy to find new shows)

I pay for a subscription so I don’t have to listen to ads on my favourite shows. I love the choice of podcasts available but there’s a massive flaw in the app software.

No matter how up-to-date my app is, it will randomly, persistently and continuously force quit / crash / shut down. I’ve been sat for 20-30 minutes before just trying to start an episode but the app will repetitively force quit. This happens on downloaded and not downloaded episodes. The times when it does work, the podcast plays fine but there’s like a 20% chance of this happening. The other 80% I have to re-open the app every time it crashes just to try and continue an episode.

The other day it crashed upwards of 40 times in the space of 20 minutes. I was out shopping and I just wanted to listen to my podcast. What’s more, when you do get to listen after it’s crashed, the playback has jumped backwards a few seconds so on that occasion I listened to the same 4 seconds of audio over 40 times and nothing more because it crashed at the same moment!!! It’s seriously infuriating!

Developers need to seriously do some work to make this a user friendly experience!
