Learning new lingo? Duolingo makes practising a language feel less like studying and more like playing. Here are five tips to make the most of the app’s gamified approach.

Team up and tackle the weekly Friends Quest for big rewards.

Go on a quest

A little accountability can be just the thing to push your learning to the next level. Join a weekly Friends Quest to get a special reward when you and your partner complete a shared goal. Your teammate will get a Friends Quest Boost that earns them double XP. It’s a win-win!

Earn special badges

Not all badges are created equal. You can collect surprising rewards and fun badges for your Achievements trophy case by practising at odd times. Try starting your day with Duo or see what happens when you complete a late-night lesson.

Duo-fy your profile persona

Ever wanted to be a Duolingo character, like Lily, Bea or Falstaff? Create your own avatar! There are so many ways to personalise it – colourful glasses, hip headwear, silly expressions. (The rainbow googly eyes are one of our favourites.) To get started, head to your profile.

Super Duolingo unlocks personalised daily reviews, which help you focus on lessons you’ve struggled with.

Learn from your mistakes

You’ll lose a precious heart for each mistake you make, but don’t fear. Super Duolingo subscribers get to review unlimited mistakes to target their trouble areas and mend their broken hearts into gold!

Max-imise your studies with AI

Duolingo Max unlocks two exciting AI-powered features. With Explain My Answer, chat with Duo to learn why your answer was incorrect – or have Duo clarify the subtler points of a language. With Roleplay, practise your conversation skills in real-life situations, such as ordering coffee at a Paris café or planning a hike around Spain’s Roques de García.
