Otter brings artificial intelligence to the human voice. It’s an automatic transcription app: whether you’re recording a voice note, a lecture, a business meeting or a video conference, the app listens to what’s being said and automatically turns it into on-screen, searchable text.

It also adds suggested keywords, which you can use to navigate through the recording when you play it back.

You can use your device’s own mic, your AirPods or a Bluetooth microphone, and the app can also transcribe from previously recorded audio. As you’d expect, the better quality the audio, the better results you’ll get.

Note-taking and transcription made easy.

The app integrates with your iOS or Google Calendar to remind you to record meetings, and it can use those calendar entries to automatically title your notes.

No automatic transcription service is error-free, but Otter does a very good job: we found it worked well even in noisy environments, and because the text remains linked to the original recording you can tap to hear what was said in the bits Otter didn’t quite catch.

It’s easy to share your recordings too, which makes Otter a great way of capturing the gist of conversations or meetings without any arguments over whose turn it is to take the notes.
