Igneous is a notes app you drive with one thumb. On iPhone there's no toolbar at the top of the screen: everything lives in one dock at the bottom, and it moves the way Safari's tab bar does. Your notes are plain Markdown files in a folder you choose — on your device, in iCloud Drive, or anywhere Files can reach — so they open in any other app, today and in twenty years. No account, no database, no analytics.
GET ANYWHERE WITHOUT REACHING
• Tap the pill in the dock to search every note, like tapping Safari's address bar.
• Swipe it sideways to move between open notes, and keep going past the last one for a new note.
• Swipe up on it and your open notes spread out as cards.
• Swipe in from the left edge for your notebook, and from the right for the Inspector.
• Pull down on a note to find a word in it. Hold any button for more.
• While you read, the dock folds into a slim pill out of the way. Liquid Glass on iOS 26; solid with Reduce Transparency.
• On iPad: a floating notebook pane, a real tab bar, and as many windows as Stage Manager will hold.
CAPTURE THE MOMENT
• Press the Action Button, a Lock Screen widget or a Control Center tile and you're typing in a new note — even from a closed app.
• Record a voice note from the Action Button, Siri, the app icon or the note you're in. Igneous transcribes it on your device while you talk, shows the words on the Lock Screen, and saves the audio and transcript into today's note or a note of its own.
• Copy a voice note — recording and transcript together — and paste it into Messages, Mail or another note.
WRITE IN MARKDOWN, SEE IT BEAUTIFULLY
• A live editor that renders headings, lists, tasks, tables, callouts, highlights, maths and diagrams as you type, while the file stays plain text.
• A formatting bar just above the keyboard, and Writing Tools that keep your links and structure intact.
• Wikilinks, embeds, backlinks, tags and a graph of how your notes connect.
• Search every note instantly, including handwriting on your canvases.
• Daily notes, a calendar, tasks gathered from every note, templates and a board view.
DRAW WHEN WORDS WON'T DO
• Canvases for sketches and diagrams, with Apple Pencil on iPad, beside cards and links to your notes.
• Opens JSON Canvas and Excalidraw drawings.
WORKS WITH YOUR MAC — AND OFFLINE
• Keep a notebook in iCloud Drive ▸ Igneous and it's on all your devices.
• Or pair with Igneous on your Mac over your own network: the phone keeps a full offline copy and sends its edits when it's back. Changes to different lines are combined, and if you both changed the same words, both versions are kept. Drawings merge shape by shape.
• Nothing ever passes through a server of ours — there isn't one.
SHORTCUTS, SIRI AND WIDGETS
• Actions for new notes, today's note, tasks, search and voice notes, ready for Shortcuts and Siri.
• Home Screen widgets with buttons you choose, Lock Screen widgets, Control Center controls, Focus filters and Live Activities.
YOUR NOTES, YOUR FILES
Igneous reads Obsidian-flavoured Markdown as written and never adds anything you didn't ask for. Point it at the vault you already keep.
Ratings & Reviews
This app has not received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Linked notes that know why, PDFs you can link into, and a calendar beside your notes.
NEW IN WRITING
• Typed links: write [[Project Alpha|rel:depends_on]] and the link shows a coloured label for the relationship. Find them with outgoing.depends_on = [[Project Alpha]] or incoming.depends_on = [[Project Alpha]] in a query. In the graph, typed links point the way they read, and a Link types menu shows just the ones you choose. Plain Markdown, so other apps just see a link.
• Link to a page, some text or a region of a PDF: [[Paper.pdf#page=4]]. Tap it and the PDF opens beside the note (a sheet on iPhone), scrolled to the spot. Select text in the PDF and tap Insert to make the link. Search finds PDF text page by page.
• Edit a ![[Note#Heading]] or ![[Note#^block]] embed right where it sits. Your change is saved into the note it came from.
• Type =SUM(B2:B8) in a table cell for a live total. The value stays in the file, so other apps show it too. Tables and queries get a footer for sum, average, min, max and count.
• Cells in a query table are editable: tick a checkbox, pick a status or change a date, and the note it belongs to is updated.
• Note schemas: describe the properties and headings a kind of note should have, in a template or .igneous/schemas.json. Missing properties show as faint rows you can fill in with one tap, and schema:invalid lists the notes that don't match.
• Compare & Restore: in a note's History, Compare shows an earlier version beside the note, with a slider to walk through the versions and a button to put back just one block.
• Voice notes: the player under a recording now plays properly, and the time marks under it jump to that moment.
CALENDAR AND REMINDERS (OFF UNTIL YOU TURN IT ON)
• Settings ▸ Periodic & Automation ▸ Calendar & Reminders. Show your calendar's events next to the day, open a meeting note for any event, and give a task a time on the day's timeline.
• Sync tasks that have a due date with a Reminders list called Igneous. Finish one there and it's ticked here, and the other way round. Nothing in your notes is ever deleted.
ON-DEVICE INTELLIGENCE
• Related Notes in the Inspector now has a Link button: add a note close in meaning to the one you're reading, as a link, in one tap. It uses an index that builds on your device while it's charging.
• On iOS 26 with Apple Intelligence, type a question in Search and choose Ask Vault. The answer is written on your device from your notes, with the notes it used listed beneath.
FROM THE WEB
• Share a page from Safari and the note keeps the article, not the menus around it, with where it came from. Optionally, Settings ▸ General & Vaults ▸ Save web images with clipped pages keeps the pictures in your notebook. It's off until you turn it on, and it only asks the site for each picture.
