Mobile banking best case practice
The banking or mobile banking space in Hong Kong is pretty much a lackluster full of buggy and user-not-friendly banking apps that don’t generally have the users in mind. HKMA VB initiative has finally brought new players in the industry to challenge the status quo and created new opportunities. Of all the VB launches I’ve seen so far this year, Mox Bank is definitely the cream of the crop in terms of features (e.g. 1% interest, cash back, all-in-one debit/credit card, etc.) and customer experience (e.g. phased rollout to avoid queuing time). Kudos to the Mox team for the amazing work and keep it up!
Unhelpful support
While the app is well designed, and the instant cash back, daily interest and swapping between debit and credit are amazing features. The support is remarkably unhelpful, several fraudulent transactions were made on my account (probably details stolen online), the response from support was simply “contact the merchant”. After another call to support they told me an investigation was started, but this appears to not have been the case. I spend hours on the phone with the merchant trying to resolve this, luckily they refunded. However I still had to ask Mox support to refund the extra cross border charges. Money stolen, and it seems like support didn’t even try to help.
Updating this after weeks; downgrading this to one star now. Their support remains unresponsive, and my only option now is to file a complaint with the HKMA. Hope that you never need any support, otherwise you’re just out of luck.
Decent but room for improvment
The app has been overall pretty good so far. However, there are limitations so I’ve docked a star. What I would love to see in order for me to rate higher is be the ability to be able to customise the category of each purchase in the spending tab. At the moment, multiple things fall under “other”: parking, dentist, online purchases etc. likely these vendors haven’t been categorised hence why it would be useful if we could recategorise it ourselves to get a clearer overview of our spending habits.
