Pixelmator goes pro
Making one of the best photo editors even better.
Pro image editing for everyone
How do you improve a photo editor that’s been one of the best for more than a decade? That’s the tough question developer Pixelmator Team dealt with while designing Pixelmator Pro. The answer, it turns out, is to produce a photo editing app that’s also great for graphic design and illustration – and advanced enough to do all three well.
The first thing you’ll notice is Pro’s uncluttered design. Every tool and panel can be accessed from a single window. With one click, the sidebar vanishes, letting you focus on the work at hand. The animation is sleek and fast enough to never feel distracting, even when the workflow requires frequent tool changes.
Just beneath this clean interface is a compelling range of powerful features. Pro offers a new, enriched experience for illustrators, with a suite of customisable brushes and support for external drawing tablets like pressure sensitivity and tilt. Graphic designers will appreciate the broad range of vector tools and custom shapes.
Pro also supports non-destructive editing, and its advanced colour adjustment capabilities can make images pop without leaving artefacts. Need to apply the same tweaks multiple times? The Recipe feature allows you to create presets of customised levels and effects that you can apply to multiple images or share with others.
Pro even adds machine learning features to the mix, offering an extra layer of intelligence to your editing. By leveraging the Core ML model on macOS, Pro can automatically recognise objects, name layers and detect horizons with startling accuracy. The Repair tool can also detect and remove complex objects – like a couple of wayward strands of hair – with just a few clicks.
