Deze oefening is een auditieve training ontworpen met als doel geleidelijk aan het vermogen van de gebruiker te verbeteren om verschillende tonale patronen te horen en te onderscheiden, om veranderingen in geluiden tussen de oren te kunnen volgen en om veranderingen in toonhoogten op te kunnen merken. Deze vaardigheden komen in verschillende studies naar voren als belangrijke bouwstenen voor de algemene taalontwikkeling, fonologische verwerking, taalbegrip en leesvaardigheden. Verondersteld wordt dat deze vaardigheden plaats vinden nog voordat de informatie de taalcentra van de hersenen hebben bereikt. Bij de meeste mensen zal dit in de rechterhersenhelft gebeuren om vervolgens de informatie door te geven via het corpus collosum naar de linkerhersenhelft, waar bij de meeste mensen zich de taalcentra bevinden.
