छत्रपती शिवाजीराजे भोसले (१९ फेब्रुवारी १६३० ते ३ एप्रिल १६८०) हे इ.स. १८१८ पर्यंत टिकलेल्या आणि आपल्या परमोत्कर्षाच्या अवस्थेत भारतीय उपखंडाचा बराचसा भाग व्यापणाऱ्या मराठा साम्राज्याचे संस्थापक होते. जनता त्यांना शिवराय, शिवाजी महाराज किंवा राजे नावाने संबोधते. भोसले कुळातील या सुपुत्राने विजापूरच्या आदिलशाहीविरुद्ध आणि मोगल साम्राज्याविरुद्ध ऐतिहासिक संघर्ष करून मराठा स्वराज्य स्थापन केले. रायगड ही राजधानी असलेले स्वतंत्र मराठा राज्य शिवाजीने उभे केले आणि इ.स. १६७४ मध्ये छत्रपती म्हणून राज्याभिषेक करवून घेतला. उत्कृष्ट योद्धा, आदर्श शासनकर्ता, प्रजाहितदक्ष कल्याणकारी राजा म्हणून जागतिक आणि विशेषत्वाने मराठी इतिहासात त्यांना अत्युच्च स्थान आहे. महाराष्ट्रात, छत्रपती शिवाजी हे शिवाजीराजा, शिवाजीराजे, शिवबा, शिवबाराजे, शिव, शिवराय, शिवा अशा अनेक नावांनी ओळखले जातात. शिवाजीचा जन्मदिवस हा ‘शिवजयंती’ म्हणून साजरा होतो. शिवाजी आणि त्यांचा पुत्र संभाजी यांचा संयुक्त उल्लेख शिवशंभू असा होतो. शिवाजीच्या कारकीर्दीला शिवकाल असेही म्हणतात. शिस्तबद्ध लष्कर व सुघटित प्रशासकीय यंत्रणेच्या बळावर शिवाजीने एक सामर्थ्यशाली आणि प्रागतिक राज्य उभे केले. भूगोल, आश्चर्यजनक वेगवान हालचाली आणि बलाढ्य शत्रूंचे मनोधैर्य खच्ची करणारे नेमके हल्ले यांचा वापर करणारे गनिमी काव्याचे तंत्र त्यांनी यशस्वीपणे वापरले. आपल्या वडिलांकडून मिळालेल्या २,००० सैनिकांच्या छोट्या तुकडीपासून एक लाख सैनिकांचे लष्कर शिवाजी महाराजांनी उभे केले. किनारी आणि अंतर्गत प्रदेशातील किल्ल्यांची डागडुजी करण्यासोबतच अनेक किल्लेही त्यांनी उभारले. राज्यकारभारात मराठी भाषेचा वापर करण्यास त्यांनी प्रोत्साहन दिले. व्हियतनामच्या युद्धात शिवकालिन गनिमी काव्याचा आदर्श आणि अभ्यास करून अमेरिका सारख्या सैन्याला जेरीस आणले. Shivaji Bhonsle 1627/1630 – 3 April 1680) was an Indian warrior king and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. In 1674, he was formally crowned as the Chhatrapati (Monarch) of his realm at Raigad. Shivaji established a competent and progressive civil rule with the help of a disciplined military and well-structured administrative organizations. He innovated military tactics, pioneering unconventional methods which leveraged strategic factors like geography, speed, and surprise and focused pinpoint attacks to defeat his larger and more powerful enemies. He revived ancient Hindu political traditions and court conventions and promoted the usage of Marathi and Sanskrit, rather than Persian, in court and administration. Shivaji's legacy was to vary by observer and time but he began to take on increased importance with the emergence of the Indian independence movement, as many elevated him as a proto-nationalist and hero of the Hindus. Particularly in Maharashtra, debates over his history and role have engendered great passion and sometimes even violence as disparate groups have sought to characterize him and his legacy.
