This app saved my life!

Honestly, this is the best language learning app. It is so effective for me! I can’t believe how fast I’m able to learn kanji, and the best part is that I feel like they did all the hard work for me, and I’m only putting the minimum amount of effort into my kanji learning process. It’s obviously not the case: it takes motivation to open this app every day and always do your reviews. Especially on high levels, you get so many lessons and reviews that it’s so easy to just skip those vocabs lessons. But it’s so important to do everything while going at your own pace! Whatever the pace, Wanikani will make you learn kanji faster and better than any other method you might want to use.

Could be better

Here are three main disadvantages of using this app for me:
1) usage of unofficial radical names:
I have been learning Japanese for some time already and was using official radical names so each time a radical like “jet”, “scooter” or “triceratops” appears it makes me cringe
2) the mnemonics used in this app are overwhelmingly tied to an American culture:
As am not an American it makes really difficult to use many mnemonics in the app. For example: who is Tyra Banks? What is New York Yankees? And why do I need to know what is Lost?
3) There is no way (or I could not find one) to add my own mnemonics:
Many mnemonics I find quite disturbing and violent. Unnecessary links to blood, torture and death. I would prefer to use my own, but there is no way to record them in the app.

Having said that the app is good if:
1) you haven’t learned radicals yet or don’t mind relearn them differently
2) you are an American or familiar with American culture
3) you are ok with violence/blood/torture in the mnemonics

This app is almost perfect!

Note to the developer: It looks like the recent iOS update made the interface bounds get compressed vertically a bit but only when the OS UI scale is in large mode. the app is still useable though.

I am so grateful for this app!
The interface now switches to swipe typing automatically for Japanese input if you want once you set it to that keyboard the first time.😄 It might also be nice to have the UI text localized to the OS language.🐢
