SpeechRace is a game to help with the repetitions needed to learn to pronounce the Finnish R in a fun way. The player’s sports car moves when a selected word is repeated. The speech is not sent out from the device, as on-device speech recognition is used. Speech can optionally be saved in the app for later listening.
The game allows setting your own goals with your own rewards, as well as a daily reminder to practice at a suitable time. You can make the game suitable for your pace of practice by adjusting the other cars’ speed.
The exercises are based on publicly available materials for practicing the Finnish R. This app aids in increasing repetitions, but it does not guarantee the correctness of pronunciation or that the practice is at the right level for the user. The need for practice is individual, so it is important to visit a speech therapist to determine what should be practiced and how. The exercises do not replace speech therapy, and a child should practice together with an adult to ensure the correctness of pronunciation of the repeated word.
