Scales, Harmony & Ear Training

Free · In-App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Hear what makes each guitar mode unique. Explore scales, harmony, fretboard patterns, modal vamps and real musical examples—all in one practical guide. ExploreModes — App Store Description Discover what makes each musical mode sound unique — and learn how to use that sound on guitar. ExploreModes is a practical guide to the seven modes, combining ear training, music theory, harmony and fretboard practice to help you move beyond simply memorising scale patterns. Rather than treating modes as abstract formulas, ExploreModes helps you hear the differences that give each mode its character. EXPLORE ALL SEVEN MODES Learn the sound and structure of: • Ionian • Dorian • Phrygian • Lydian • Mixolydian • Aeolian • Locrian Each lesson focuses on the notes and harmonic ideas that make that mode distinctive. HEAR THE DIFFERENCE Compare modes with familiar major and minor sounds and listen for the characteristic intervals that change their mood. Short audio examples help connect the theory on screen with what you actually hear. UNDERSTAND THE HARMONY Hear modal chord progressions and discover how characteristic chords help establish each mode. Use repeating vamps as a backing for your own guitar improvisation. PUT IT ON THE GUITAR Interactive fretboard diagrams show where the important notes sit under your fingers. Use the included playing suggestions to experiment with each modal sound rather than simply running up and down a scale. HEAR MODES IN REAL MUSIC Explore carefully selected song examples and learn what to listen for when modes appear in real-world music. QUICK MODE REFERENCE Choose any root note and mode to instantly see: • Scale notes • Interval formula • Characteristic note • Tonic chord • Diatonic harmony • Parent major scale You can also hear the selected scale directly from the reference. FREE TO EXPLORE Ionian, Dorian and Mixolydian lessons are included free, along with the complete Mode Reference. A single optional lifetime purchase unlocks Lydian, Phrygian, Aeolian and Locrian. No subscription. Whether you're discovering modes for the first time or trying to turn familiar scale shapes into sounds you can recognise and use, ExploreModes provides a practical bridge between theory, your ear and the guitar fretboard Terms of Use (EULA): https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/
