Isles of Scilly Museum on the Move: Themed Walking Companions with phone alerts.

This App is designed for use when visiting or living on the Isles of Scilly.

As you walk the coastal paths and country lanes of the five inhabited islands of the Isles of Scilly, your phone will alert you when you have reached a point of interest. Use the Museum on the Move maps to chart your course to make sure you collect all the data.

There are four walking companions available this year, all themed around shipwrecks.

• Shipwrecks of Bryher and Tresco
• Shipwrecks of St Agnes
• Shipwrecks of St Martin’s
• Shipwrecks of St Mary’s

There are over 700 shipwrecks in Scilly and the walking companions guide you to viewpoints of some of the most famous wrecks’ locations: learn about the HMS Association fleet disaster of 1707, the tragedy of the ss Schiller in 1875 (locally known as ‘Victorian Titanic’) or celebrate the intrepid gig rescue from the ss Delaware 1871.

At each location you will be able to:

• Locate the site of the wreck using a built-in compass.
• Read the story of the wreck.
• See pictures and photographs.
• Listen to songs and poetry inspired by the wreck.
• Explore some of the Museum’s artefacts in three dimensions.

The companions will also direct you to pop-up shipwreck exhibitions located in hotels, pubs, shops, community halls and even a telephone box.

You must visit each location to collect the data, but once you have done this, the information is stored on your phone. So, if you don’t have time to take it all in when on your walk, you will be able to enjoy it at your leisure.

Watch this space for next years’ additional companions which will allow you explore the islands’ archaeology.

The Isles of Scilly Museum was opened in 1967, Museum on the Move is creative response to its closure.

The App is free, but you are invited to make a donation at any of the strategically placed contactless donation points, or on our website IOSMusuem.org. Pop into the Museum’s shop and visitor centre and let us know how you get on.

How the App was developed
The Isles of Scilly Museum Walking Companion App was developed as part of the Coastal Time Tripping project, which saw Cornwall Museums Partnership working collaboratively with Falmouth University’s Game Academy to create exciting and innovative digital offers for five local Museums.

How to Reach Scilly
The Isles of Scilly are an English Archipelago situated 28 miles off Land’s End in Cornwall. To get here, you need to cross the water – by plane, helicopter or by boat. Whichever option you choose, it’s important to plan ahead…

Visit www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk or www.penzancehelicopters.co.uk to plan your visit.

Flights operate out of Exeter (March – October), Newquay and Land’s End. The flight takes about an hour from Exeter, 30 minutes from Newquay and around 15 minutes if you fly from Land’s End. Skybus is the island’s own local airline and runs a 19-seat De Havilland ‘Twin Otter’.

The Scillonian III is a passenger ferry (there is no car ferry) and sails out from Penzance on a scenic and unrushed cruise that takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Treat it as the start of your trip and make the most of the views as you make your way over. You might even spot a dolphin!

Penzance Helicopters fly directly to St Mary’s. As with the plane, the flight takes just 15 minutes, with incredible aerial views of the Cornish coast and the islands from the state-of-the-art modern helicopter.
