6 tips for surviving Death Stranding

Stay on your feet with these timely tactics.

The post-apocalyptic world of Death Stranding is hauntingly beautiful – and packed with danger. As futuristic courier Sam Bridges (played by The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus), you’ll tackle unforgiving terrain and terrifying monsters as you reconnect pockets of civilisation.

It’s no cakewalk. But with these tips, you’ll be clobbering bandits, annihilating ghosts and delivering piping-hot pizzas like there’s no tomorrow.

1. Stay on track

Though the United Cities of America is full of places to explore, resist the urge to wander off too early in the game. Follow the main story through episode 3 to unlock vital gear – including a hovering sled – that’ll make side missions easier later on.

You can carry a lot more than this, but it’ll mean slower going – and more risk of taking a tumble.

2. Pack light

Don’t overload yourself with packages: the trade-offs – slower movement, rapidly draining stamina and the constant risk of toppling over – aren’t worth it. Pack only what you absolutely need, and try not to take on too many deliveries simultaneously. You can always grab more parcels later.

3. Recon the rivers

Wading into a river that’s too deep is asking for trouble – you’ll likely be swept off your feet while your precious cargo floats away. Always use your scanner to check water depth; if any part of it shows red, find another place to cross.

4. Be merciful

Using lethal force on humans (like the bandit MULEs who try to steal your cargo) is a bad idea: dead bodies that aren’t properly disposed of turn into ghostly Beached Things (BTs), and if a non-player character stumbles into one of these spirits, it’ll trigger a voidout – an explosion that creates a massive crater. When possible, knock bad guys out instead!

There’s nothing like finding a ladder right where you need it. Thanks, kind stranger!

5. Benefit from others

The unique connected nature of Death Stranding means stuff other players build in their worlds – including ladders, bridges and even paved highways – can appear in yours. Watch for glowing signs left by other players to warn of steep cliffs, nearby enemies or incoming storms. They can be a literal lifesaver!

6. Avoid rain

The supernatural rain will quickly wear out your cargo, reducing the rating you earn upon delivery. Keep a supply of container-repair spray on hand, and use it on damaged cargo right before you drop it off. (You can eventually unlock a backpack cover that helps keep your goods safe, as well as access to a weather network that’ll let you track and avoid those nasty storms.)
