Experts’ opinion:
PCMag: “[Proton VPN’s] is a slick VPN with an excellent collection of advanced features, and it has the best free subscription plan we've seen. Few competitors can match its mix of affordability, features, and design. For all that, it gets a rare five-star rating and earns our Editors' Choice award”
TechRadar: “The completely free tier is something no other competitor [...] offers.
Wired: "The best VPN" "Overall, Proton VPN is very fast"
Separate big thanks for availability of Russian servers, this is going additional karma points for prooving that your company is really neutral. But would like to have Iran and North Korea locations also.
Maybe will work for some

- Free version gives you location at random (you cannot choose what country you need) - so need to pay if you want a specific country - If you have a subscription my advice is create a VPN profile with filters (country you need and add “fastest”) connect to profile it will find fastest available option for the country you need (if you just chose country it will be slow) - Doesn’t work on the big streaming services. (Gets detected and you are not able to watch anything) - Has add block in by default turned on so need to turn that off as most sites can detect it and blocks you. - Word of advice: When you cancel subscription do it on the last date (before it renews). If you cancel it cancels but you have payed full month fee so if you pay and cancel you have payed for nothing. Most services if you cancel after paying lets you use them till end of term - this one does not. You lose money. - Advice: when you leave - after cancelation remove all payment options (if it does not allow you to remove a payment method (the last default payment) it means you have not canceled it and you will get billed) spam that cancel when you are leaving.(Update after dev comment) Streaming services: Disney+ and netflix (on 3 uk servers) gives error (maybe im just unlucky and those exact ones are blocked by them)Channel4 (same uk servers) worked fineI had a subscription. I tried to cancel it on first month’s end and remove payment method but it did not allow me to remove payment method as it was the default one. Then i got charged for 2nd month (guess i didnt cancel it on the first try- thats fine) On second month after it charged me i tried to canceled it again 2 days into renewed subscription and removed payment method (success) but it downgraded me to free version immediately. So i payed for two months in total and got to use it for 1 month and 2 days.

The default auto-connect option will connect you to the fastest available server for you. This leads to better load balancing and higher speed, which is a priority for free users. That said, although you can't select a specific server as a free user, you can change the server that was initially assigned to you.As for the issue with streaming services, which ones are you having trouble with exactly? We have a support article listing all the streaming services we currently officially support at https://protonvpn.com/support/streaming-guide.Regarding the issue with NetShield, which specific websites are you encountering this behavior with? Contact us at https://protonvpn.com/support-form with more details about these issues so we can investigate further and help you troubleshoot.Lastly, if you cancel your Proton VPN subscription, it actually cancels the auto-renewal, meaning you get to keep the benefits of your paid subscription until its expiration date. Once the subscription expires, you're downgraded to the Free plan instead of the subscription renewing. Furthermore, if you cancel your subscription, you will simply no longer be charged for it in the future, regardless if your payment method is still associated with the account or not. We don't just charge users without an active subscription for no reason.Edit: Disney+, Netflix, and Channel 4 are all officially supported by Proton VPN, therefore you should be able to stream them without an issue. Contact us at https://protonvpn.com/support-form with more details as previously mentioned so we can assist you further with this. As for the case with your subscription, you may have made the cancelation before we introduced the change to allow users to retain the benefits of their subscription until the expiration date, after which the account is downgraded to the Free plan.

This is a pure scam. You can't unsubscribe and they will charge you every month ignoring your emails.P.S. I have a history of communication with you not responding to my emails for months. In my very first email I attached all the proofs that my account does not exist, so I cannot login or cancel my subscription. I had to block my bank card to stop you from charging me, again, because you IGNORED ME FOR MONTHS. Only after this review and emails to your legal team I received a response. If I could, I would give you a minus star.

That doesn't sound right. Note that all Proton VPN plans are renewed automatically unless the subscription is canceled before the renewal date. If you'd like to prevent your subscription from auto-renewing, you'll need to cancel your plan from the Subscription tab of your account at https://account.protonvpn.com/login. Contact us at https://protonvpn.com/support-form so we can help sort out this situation for you. If you've already done that, share your ticket number with us here so we can check on your inquiry.Edit: Would you mind letting us know which email address you sent your inquiry to initially? We'd be happy to check things on our end.
Nearly all is behind a pay wall

I understand that a company needs money and stuff but putting nearly everything behind a pay wall is a bit crazy
Developer Response
Our decision to offer certain features exclusively on our paid plans is to ensure the continued availability of our free plan for users who may not be able to afford to subscribe. It's about striking a balance between offering a free service and providing added benefits to our paid subscribers.
