Watch Together Studio on Mac now works like a real production studio: add as many cameras and calls as you like, choose which appear in each scene, and drag, crop and layer every tile. Schedule a YouTube watch-along ahead of time so your audience gets a reminder, and save your whole setup with the show so it is ready when you return. Plus a clearer link to our privacy policy where you connect YouTube, and fixes throughout.

Runs on iPhones and iPads from iOS 18. Clearer text on Apple TV with no cut-off titles, faster start on older Apple TVs, and Remove from History. Many catalog corrections: titles, dates and summaries, films that played the wrong file now play the right one, and colorized copies appear as versions of the original.

Tonight: one film a day, the same for everyone, now leads Home. Channels run on one clock, so every viewer sees the same program at the same moment, shown in your own time. Change channel without leaving the picture with the up and down buttons over the video. Scenes: frames from the film on its page. Choose one to start the film there. Browse by length, and a new An Hour or Less row on Home. Continue Watching shows the time left and your progress, and its widget tiles now start the film. iPad adds an extra-large widget. Search puts the title or director you typed first, and a pasted archive.org link opens the film. Collections made by archive.org members, in their own words. Touch and hold a poster to favorite it, share it or open it in a new window on iPad. iPad: a sidebar of places, a menu bar with keyboard shortcuts, films in their own windows, drag and drop into Favorites and playlists, and a Clip Studio with the picture beside its settings. iPhone: picture-in-picture keeps you in the app while the film floats, and Library, Browse and Channels are simpler to find your way around. Siri and Shortcuts can open a film by name, and Handoff continues a film's page on your other devices. "Something Wrong with This Film?" on every film's page. Watch Together: the host chooses the copy everyone watches, and can show a card in their own words. Plus many fixes to captions, titles, dates and the catalog.

Choose a version now lists every upload of a film that Archive Watch has folded into one title, so a copy with sound or a sharper transfer is one choice away. On iPhone and iPad you can cast a film to a Chromecast or Google TV from "Share and more", with a full remote on your phone. Watch Together: joining a room with a code or a link now opens the film and starts it. In the Studio you can turn YouTube chat on or off during a show and share the film's Archive Watch page in chat; ending a live broadcast asks first; and a show started over a paused film shows the film instead of a black screen. On the Mac, choose your call from macOS's own window picker.

Watch Together Studio: host a live watch-along of a public-domain film on your own YouTube or Twitch channel, with your camera, microphone, scenes, cards and chat. Connect by signing in, or paste your own stream key. Friends on your call can join a room and watch the film in step.

Party Play tells you what you're watching. Party Play and channels play films you didn't pick, so the player now answers the three questions that raises. On Apple TV, the transport bar has Play with Sound, an Open Title button that takes you to the film's own page (favorite it, add it to a playlist, read about it), and Remember, which puts it in your watch history right away. Also: the playlist Share button is where you can see it. Open any playlist and it's in the top corner; you can also press and hold a playlist in your Library. On Mac the icon sits beside the playlist's name.

Share a playlist with anyone. Every playlist you make now has a Share button. It turns the whole list into a single link — no account needed at either end, and nothing of yours is stored on a server: the films travel inside the link itself. Open one and you can browse it, play it, or add it to your own library. Links open straight into the app on Apple TV, iPhone, iPad and Mac, and work in any browser for anyone you send them to. On Apple TV the link becomes a code you can scan with your phone. Also in this release: faster, steadier playback, better artwork throughout, live captions on films that have no subtitle track, and a long list of fixes to search, browse and the TV guide.

Playback and compatibility fixes. - Films that carry subtitles no longer stop part-way through. The captioned playback path was loading an entire film into memory instead of a few minutes of it, which ended playback on phones after a few minutes. Subtitles now draw over ordinary, resilient playback. - Smoother browsing on earlier Apple TV hardware. - Fixed a launch failure that could make the app close immediately on some Apple TVs. - Sort a genre or decade by year, rating or title. - Catalog: titles that could not be verified as public domain have been removed.

Films now keep reconnecting when the connection drops. Playback used to give up after a single retry, which could end a film part-way through — thank you to the viewer who reported one stopping after about five minutes. You can also now sort by year, rating or title inside any genre, decade or collection, not just on the Browse screen.

tvOS 27 audio fix: films are now delivered as fragmented video, which resolves audio dropping out a few minutes into playback on the newest Apple TV software. Playback resilience, captions, and resume are unchanged.

Watch Together — SharePlay comes to Archive Watch Watch any film in perfect sync with friends and family. Pick a title, tap Watch Together, and start the FaceTime call right from the app — no need to set the call up first. Pause, seek, or resume and everyone follows along, and if someone's connection slows down the group waits for them. Sessions move between devices: start on your iPhone and carry the call to your iPad, your Mac, or your Apple TV. iPad is now its own experience: - A genuine two-column layout, not a stretched phone screen. - Synopses and reviews stay comfortable instead of running the full width of the display. - Controls and selectors are sized for the iPad rather than blown up. iPhone fixes: - Search filters can now be reached and used. - The Play button offers Resume when you're partway through a film. - Text no longer loses its first character on Detail screens. - Settings stays where you are when you flip a toggle, instead of jumping back to the top. - More controls are properly labelled for VoiceOver. Everywhere: - Artwork is never stretched or cropped to fit — posters are shown at their own proportions, and Home features professionally designed artwork. - Reviews and descriptions are readable in full. - Hundreds of titles corrected: better cast lists, accurate ratings, and films sorted into the right categories.

Major update for captions and individual controls over which Archive.org video plays. The videos should play much more quickly as well!

Brand-new caption engine that pulls from Open Subtitles, on-device transcription, and AI-assisted transcription. Also, updates to Airplay functionality!

- Verified playback: every film and show on your home screen and shelves is checked to play correctly — no more dead links front and center. - 1,000+ documentaries: the Documentary category was nearly empty; it now holds over a thousand real documentaries, from newsreels to feature-length films. - Accurate details: corrected runtimes and categories across the catalog, so a short is a short and a feature is a feature. - Fresh on return: the app now updates its catalog when you come back after a while away, instead of showing a stale library. - Steadier sync and playback across all your devices.

Phones are for making things, not just watching them: - New: Clip Studio — trim any public-domain film into a clip, GIF, or fan edit, add captions and color looks, and share it. Find "Create" on a film's page. - Subtitles on over 10,000 films! - Discover by the crowd: new Watching Now, Community Favorites, Most Discussed, and Top Rated shelves, plus real viewer ratings and reviews on Detail. - Favorite, share, or add individual TV episodes to playlists. - "Open in Callsheet" from any title to dig into its cast and crew. - Sharper artwork, cleaner titles and synopses, smarter "More Like This," and a true "Random Film" that lands on full-length features. - More reliable Continue Watching sync across your devices.
