Cost keeps a spending log without asking you to type one in.
Share a receipt — screenshot, photo of the paper one, order confirmation, plain text — and an on-device agent reads off the merchant, total, currency, date and category. Confident drafts file themselves; the rest wait in the Inbox with the agent's reasoning shown, a tap from saved. It runs on Apple Intelligence, on your device: nothing uploaded, no account, no bank connection.
Fix a draft and the fix becomes a rule. Rename a merchant once and the next receipt from it arrives renamed. Add standing instructions in plain English — "the corner shop is Groceries" — and they hold on every receipt after. Everything Cost has learned is listed in Settings, editable and deletable.
Categories stay yours: matched to one you already have, or proposed for you to accept. Never invented, never forced onto a purchase that doesn't fit. Tags cover what a category can't — a trip, a project, "Work". A flight, four dinners and a rail pass are three categories but one trip, and the trip carries its own total.
Search reads meaning. "caffeine last month" finds the coffees without sharing a word with them; "how much did my Japan trip cost" answers with the tag's total.
Trends for any week, month or year: the total against the period before, the category mix, top merchants, the tags that were running. A calendar zooming year to month to week. Totals per currency — Cost won't add two together and call it an answer.
Also: type or dictate a sentence ("Coffee at Pret, £3.20, yesterday"), ask Siri to log spending or search it, attach where you were, keep the receipt with the record.
Cost is a Mac app too, synced over iCloud. A receipt the phone couldn't settle arrives on the Mac ready to review — and if you run a model locally (Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp), Cost hands the reading to that instead. Bigger model, same machine, still nothing uploaded.
Apple Intelligence isn't on every device. Where it's missing, Cost reads what it can and parks a draft for review — an unavailable model costs you a tap, never a receipt.
