Ever since I was a kid landlocked in the Midwest, I dreamed of travel. I soaked up foreign sounds and babbled away in pretend French and Spanish. Somehow, I scripted the fantasy that my long ago far away relatives were from Aranda del Duero, Spain. Years passed. I learned French and studied in Montreal, travelled to Spain a bunch; picked up stray Spanish words living in New York and San Francisco, but never formally studied Spanish. Exactly one year ago, I set myself the challenge of total immersion in Spanish to see where I could get in one year. Hence this FIVE-star review of the Fluenz App and immersion program. Because, after one year, I speak, read, write, watch, edi academic papers in my field, and am even about to present at a conference en español. ¡Gracias Fluenz!The software program helped me chart my progress as I devoted myself to the personalized one-on-one Zoom classes with a team of top-notch coaches. I did a one-week immersion in Bogotá. As I moved through the five levels in the online software and noticed how those lessons pair with the slides and problem sets that coaches choose from to back up conversation in class, the choreography that distinguishes Fluenz from other online curricula began to reveal itself. Nowadays, while reviewing some crazy irregular tense, I look back and say to myself, “ah, now I understand why they guided me along that path to this destination.” It’s a great feeling to speak Spanish with sure footing.
