I'm building a long-term writing project: turning spoken stories in Russian into literary text, using Scrivener as the home base and AI-assisted editorial tools on top. The first link in that chain is speech-to-text, and it has to work offline, handle Russian properly, and not leak private recordings to any cloud. That's how I found MacWhisper.What works:Large-v3 transcription on Russian is excellent. Proper names, patronymics, Soviet-era toponyms, dates — all come out right, with natural punctuation. I've tested with a Rode NT-USB Mini and the quality is publication-grade after minimal cleanup.System-wide dictation is the killer feature. I can put my cursor inside Scrivener, hit a hotkey, speak, and watch the text appear. For the first time since macOS added dictation, I have something that actually works for non-English languages.Batch mode processes hours of audio overnight.
