NachtLander Land a spacecraft using nothing but a retro-rocket and your instincts. Based on the 1969 Lunar Lander by Jim Storer — one of the first computer games ever written — NachtLander faithfully recreates the original physics in a modern phosphor-glow interface inspired by vintage CRT terminals. The on-board computer has failed. You control only the burn rate: how hard to fire the retro-rocket each turn. Burn too little and you slam into the surface. Burn too much and you run out of fuel, drifting into free fall with no way to stop. Every turn is a commitment. There is no undo. THE CROSSOVER MECHANIC At full mass, even maximum thrust cannot overcome gravity. You must burn fuel to lose weight until you reach the crossover point — where thrust finally exceeds gravity and braking becomes possible. Judge the window correctly and you land. Misjudge it and you become a crater. 10 CELESTIAL BODIES Each destination is a hand-tuned physics puzzle with distinct gravity, fuel budget, and landing thresholds: Moon — The original 1969 descent. Gentle and forgiving. Phobos — 1500 lbs of fuel. No crossover. Every pound counts. Enceladus — Easy to survive. Nearly impossible to land well. Ceres — Low gravity, tight thresholds. Steady hands only. Europa — Balanced challenge. Learn the crossover mechanic. Ganymede — 30+ turn descent. Strategy over reflexes. Mars — Strong gravity, scarce fuel. Efficiency is survival. Mercury — High entry velocity. No time to think. Io — 7 turns. Volcanic gravity. Pure instinct. Titan — Extreme gravity. Narrow margins. The ultimate test. MISSION RATING Every landing earns a score based on impact velocity, fuel efficiency, and destination difficulty. Moon at 1.0x. Titan at 3.0x. Chase the S rating — if the physics will let you. PHOSPHOR TERMINAL AESTHETIC Every element — gauges, oscilloscope trace, status log, typewriter text — is rendered in the style of a 1970s vector display. Choose from three phosphor themes: Amber, Green, or White. CRT bloom, scan lines, and blinking warnings complete the illusion. FEATURES Authentic Storer/Ahl physics engine — 10 sub-steps per turn, exactly as written in 1969 Real-time descent oscilloscope with burn intensity markers and crash debris animation Segmented gauge cluster with chevron delta indicators for altitude, velocity, and fuel Mission rating system — landing precision x fuel efficiency x difficulty multiplier Free-fall impact predictor and fuel remaining estimate Velocity display in imperial (ft/s) or metric (m/s) Typewriter-animated mission log Full mission reference card with body parameters and landing classifications Retro sound design: burn rumble, fuel warnings, proximity alerts, landing chords No ads. No in-app purchases. No network access. Just you and gravity. HERITAGE The original Lunar Lander was written by Jim Storer in 1969 on an HP calculator, then popularised by David Ahl in BASIC Computer Games (1978). It is one of the foundational programs in computing history. NachtLander preserves that legacy — same equations, same tension, same satisfaction — wrapped in the warm glow of a phosphor screen. Part of the Nacht Suite.
