Fixed a crash when plugging a classic Range into the headphone jack. We've been supporting for seven years now! (If you have a classic Range and no headphone jack, consider upgrading to our Bluetooth model, Range Dial.)

Bug fixes in the Today Extension and customer support. (You saw the prediction times and soft-boiled egg preset from the last update, right?)

Several bug fixes, clearer explanations, a revamped customer support section, and a better firmware upgrade process, which will recover Range Dials that have become unresponsive because they're stuck in upgrade mode. Predicted done time. This is technically beta, but I wanted to get this out to you in time for a long turkey cook. Now when you set an alert in portrait orientation, you'll see an estimated time remaining to get there (and in the Today View that you get to by swiping right from your phone's notifications screen, if you've added the Range widget to that). I wouldn't completely trust the turkey to this, but me know how it works for you. As always, contact me with any feedback through Customer Support (under the Settings gear icon). Egg preset. Making great soft-boiled eggs can be tricky. We've added two tried-and-true methods. @beau suggested the idea, and if you're using the default USDA preset temperatures, you'll get his method — bring to a boil, then 6 minutes at a simmer. If you're using the gourmet preset temperatures, you'll get my wife's — drop the eggs into boiling water for 3 minutes. Get the complete instructions when you tap on the egg preset.

* Predicted done time: When you set an alert, you'll see the estimated done time after some time to collect data. This works best for longer cooking items, such as turkey. * Modernization: Screen updates for iPhone 8, haptic feedback on 7 and newer when setting/dropping/adjusting/mode alerts. * Fixed some bugs and confusing errors.

Longer graphs. Now you can go 12 or more hours if you're smoking, at least on relatively new iOS devices. I had restricted this due to glitches and crashes on some older devices. If you encounter problems now, please contact me through the app so I can troubleshoot. Easier to tell probes apart. Temperatures in graph mode now show names. Don't like those randomly generated Range Dial names? You can long-press names to change them (try using emoji). Even better, probes will get different colors to make it easy to tie name, temperature and graph line together. Right now the colors are assigned based on the type of Range you have, but in the future you'll be able to pick them yourself. Note that names and colors go with the Range Dial and the upper/lower port, not the probes you plug into them. The app no longer asks for microphone permissions until you actually plug a classic wired Range into the headphone jack. A firmware fix for the Range Dial constant clicking bug. Better transition as you go out of range of the Range Dial and it connects to another device, moving your first device to remote temperature streaming. Fixed several visual glitches with temperature display, including one that made it look like Range Dial wasn't connected.

Fixed a critical bug for Range Dial, where it will connect but most of the time, no temperatures display. Sorry I threw a wrench in your weekend cookout. But sending notes to customer support in the app does work—thanks for the help, to those who reported it.

Fixed a bug where a probe doesn't display temperature when first plugged in. For you smokers out there. the graph will go on longer now, automatically fitting to landscape display. Older devices may currently have memory issues with when graphing for a long period of time. Due to popular demand, you now get clock time in graph view and export. Tap on the time labels at top to switch the time scale to clock time.

This update is about using the app less. This is the first version of the Range app to support only iOS 8.0 and up, which allowed us to focus on these features: Temperature on lock screen and Today view. Without opening the Range app, you'll see the temperature at a glance in the Today view (drag your finger down from the top of the screen). 3D Touch shortcuts. If you have an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus, press harder on the Range app icon to quickly create alerts for the most common foods. Misc. Eliminated little bugs, notably around the support screen and dropped connections to remote Ranges.

Remote temperature monitoring. You can now watch your slow-cooking food from anywhere, something no other thermometer does. Any device that's paired with your Range will get live temperatures from it, even when you're at the store. Alerts that you set on your remote device (not the one that Range is plugged into) will be triggered while the app is in the foreground only, to conserve bandwidth and battery life. Less alarming alarms. We made alerts jarring, to make sure you didn't miss one. But it drives some of you crazy, so we've added a smoother "simple alerts" setting. The annoying repeating alert sounds when dismissing multiple alert popups have also been silenced. Misc. Cleaned up the settings panel and a bunch of little bugs besides. Last update for old devices. Barring any serious bugs, future Range app updates will run on iOS 8+. We worked hard to bring remote monitoring to your old iPad so it can retire to the kitchen, and now we want to focus on features for the OS that most of you use. Onward!

Minor update: - Works with iOS 5.1 again, functionally. Great for dedicating your old device to Range use, but the interface is polished for iOS6 and newer. This is most likely the last update that will work with 5.1. - Added resting timer. Now when you use a meat preset, you'll get an option to set a resting timer after you've hit your target temperature. Fixed a show-stopping bug: Alerts now work with iOS 8. Sorry about that one. And the little alert circles are now correctly drawn to show whether it triggers on the temperature rising, falling or both. There may still be conditions in which remote alerts aren't sent if the Range app is in the background. We'll address that shortly, but if you encounter this or other issues, please contact us from within the app (settings > support and FAQ) so we get some debugging data.
