Smith understands more of what you ask him, and says so plainly when he cannot answer. More questions about the app are answered from its own guide when you say "my" or "I" — "Is my data safe?", "How do I add a memory?", "How do I make a doctor report?" — instead of "Nothing in your memories answers that". A short question about something in your memories, such as "What about the medal?", is better at finding that memory. On an iPhone without Apple Intelligence, a question about the wider world — "What year was the first moon landing?" — is no longer answered with some of your own memories. Smith says that such questions need Apple Intelligence, and, if it is only switched off, where to turn it on. What Smith, Settings and Your data say about where your things are kept now matches the privacy policy: on this iPhone, and — with Sync with iCloud on — your memories in your own iCloud as well. The permission prompts for the microphone and speech recognition now say that where your iPhone cannot turn speech into text itself, Apple's speech service does.

The subscription is now $2.99 a month for new subscribers, after the same two free weeks. If you already subscribe — including if you are still in your two free weeks — nothing changes for you. You keep the price you signed up at for as long as you stay subscribed.

News from School Fab Lab. Now and then we arrange a get-together for the people using Shaterian, or there is something about the app worth telling you. It arrives as a card on Today the next time you open the app — never advertising, never anybody else's message, and never more than a few a year. If it has a date, "Add to my calendar" fills in your iPhone's own Add Event screen for you to confirm. "No thanks" puts it away for good. Settings › News from School Fab Lab has "Remind me before one", off unless you turn it on. With it on, and if what we have told you about has a date, Shaterian puts a reminder on your lock screen the evening before — set by Shaterian on this iPhone, the same way your daily reminder is. Nothing is sent to your iPhone from outside, and nothing about you goes anywhere to fetch any of it: the same message goes to everybody, so there is nothing to tell you apart by, and we never learn who read it.

Sync with iCloud. Turn it on in Settings and your memories are kept in your own iCloud and in step across your iPhones: what you add or remove on one appears on, or disappears from, the other. Memories only — your health notes and your picture stay on the iPhone they were made on. Off unless you turn it on. Smith's own voice, when it is not ready yet: he speaks in one of your iPhone's voices straight away instead of saying nothing, fetches his own in the background, and Settings › How he sounds has "Fetch his voice now".

Choose how Smith looks: your own picture in his orb, or his plain orb — Settings › How he looks. Smith is quicker to work out what kind of question you have asked, and the daily reminder is steadier. If the App Store is slow to answer when the app opens, the plan page now sorts itself out instead of asking you to try again.

Shaterian is now two weeks free, then $2.29 a month, through your Apple Account. Cancel whenever you like in Settings › your name › Subscriptions; your memories stay on your iPhone whatever you decide, and you can see and remove them without subscribing. Also in this version: Smith tells you about people, places and stretches of time instead of reading memories back; your calendar and Reminders are read when you ask and never copied; the daily reminder carries the day's events; every piece of health information shows its sources; and the twin's hair sits on the head.
